The Carers WA team of accredited Carer Support Counsellors provide counselling services as part of Carer Gateway in line with the Carers Recognition Act 2010. Counselling is safe, collaborative, and confidential* aimed at promoting carer and family mental health and wellbeing, enhancing self-understanding, and resolving identified concerns. Carers are active participants in the counselling process at every stage. Counselling is offered to carers through several mediums including telephone, zoom and face-to-face. The team also participate in supporting other Carers WA programs and services including community engagement to promote counselling services.

This role is predominantly aimed at:

  • Providing counselling support to young carers (8yrs +) and / or their families
  • Proactive working relationship with the young carer team as and when needed, to support their school based young carer peer support groups
  • However carer support counselling is open to ALL carers from a wide range of ages
  • Servicing carers mostly based within the Rockingham, Mandurah and surrounding areas
  • Travel will be required between schools and centrally located office based in Rockingham

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  • Must have a minimum of 3 years counselling experience in Australia OR Have 18 months counselling experience in Australia, including in an intern or volunteer role, but must have completed a Mental Health First Aid or suicide prevention course and who have also received training in recognising and responding to child protection and domestic violence risks.
  • Must be eligible for accreditation with a relevant Australian professional Association including ACA, PCFA or AASW. Continuous
  • accreditation is essential for the duration of employment and ongoing membership is at the cost of the applicant.
  • Work from a trauma informed practice model
  • Experience in counselling children (from aged 8yrs) and youth, with an understanding of National Principles of Child Safe Organisations
  • Experience in delivering family therapy involving parent & children (young carers), other adult therapy groups or couples
  • Experience in counselling clients expressing suicidal ideation with ability to formulate safe plans
  • Confident and competent at providing therapeutic sessions via telephone, web (zoom) and face to face
  • Effectively manage time, calendar and documentation to meet service delivery KPIs
  • Intermediate level of computer competency in Microsoft Suite and database management.
  • Ability to travel within Perth Metro to pre-designated counselling / community rooms and to schools to provide onsite youth / family counselling to carers.

Desirable:

  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
  • Completed the National Principles of Child Safe Organisations e-learning
  • Understanding of Family Support Network, NDIS and other services providers supporting young people and their families.
  • Current First Aid Cert & CPR
  • Experience using DASS 21 assessment tool
  • An understanding of family / unpaid carers related issues and needs – Carers Recognition Act 2004
  • Experience in working for a Not for Profit

Qualifications and Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in social behavior, counselling or health sciences
  • Must work within the Code of Ethics and Practice for their relevant association and the appropriate legislative requirements commensurate with the profession and service delivery standards.
  • Current Working with Children’s Check (or able to attain one)
  • Current C class drivers license
