Support Officer - Carer Wellness in the Home Program

Carers WA is the peak body representing the needs and interests of carers in Western Australia and is part of a national network of Carers Associations providing a range of support services, supporting Carers across Western Australia. Carers provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have disability, mental illness, a chronic condition, terminal illness, an alcohol, or other drug issue or who are frail aged.

The Support Officer – Carer Wellness in the Home Program (CWHP) is responsible for providing holistic support for carers which is tailored to their individual needs. The purpose of the role is to connect with carers, initially in the home environment, with the objective of enhancing their health and wellbeing and thereby improving resilience. The nature of the intervention can vary from emotional support, the provision of service information, training, and advocacy. This will be achieved by establishing their support needs; providing supports and where appropriate warm referrals to other support services; and developing networks, including services that will refer carers to the CWHP.

Essential Selection Criteria

  • Tertiary or other qualification and/or experience relevant to the role
  • Understanding and empathy of carers, health, mental health, ageing, and disability issues including with Aboriginal, CaLD and LGBTIQ individuals and communities
  • Knowledge of the supports available to carers, both at government level and within the community
  • Experience in speaking to small and large groups to deliver information
  • Well-developed communication skills, both written and verbal within various communication modes (phone, skype, Zoom, face to face)
  • Demonstrated capacity to develop and maintain effective relationships with a range of stakeholders
  • Ability to work as part of a team and autonomously
  • Intermediate level of competency using computer software including Microsoft Suite, CRM and/or customised client databases
  • National Police Clearance issued within the last 6 months to be provided upon employment
  • Current West Australian drivers’ license.
