About the role

We are looking for a Frontend Software Engineer with diverse, hands-on professional experience. We’re looking for someone who is skilled and experienced in a variety of technologies, tools and languages. In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to engage in a range of projects, working alongside partners to solve problems in developing countries. You’ll be working at the intersection of technology, design, and global development for concert ideation all the way to prototyping, testing and deployment.

In this role, you will:

  • Build new features and tackle issues across multiple projects
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions and contribute ideas to our technology and products
  • Review design mockups and work with design to deliver great UI and UX
  • Improve our code quality through testing, automation, and code reviews
  • Iterate products based on user feedback and product requirements
  • Support staff in adopting Catalpa’s agile product processes
  • Other tasks to adapt to the changing needs of projects

Requirements

If you have these skills and experience then we want to hear from you!

  • A relevant degree, or an intriguing reason for not having one
  • Robust experience and feel at ease writing maintainable JavaScript applications
  • Deep knowledge and experience with frontend web development from HTML5/CSS3/Javascript (ES6) to ServiceWorkers and browser storage API’s
  • Experience using Javascript bundlers such as Webpack
  • Experience with asynchronous Javascript Programming (Promises and async/await)
  • Enjoy coding and implementing awesome experiences using modern MVC frameworks such as Vue.js and Riot.js
  • Experience working closely with and iterating with UI/UX designers
  • Knowledge of current trends and best practices in frontend architecture, including performance, accessibility and usability
  • Great communication skills and ability to work closely with other parts of the organisation across time zones and cultures (we’re diverse!)
  • The ability to thrive in a fully remote organisation
  • A passion for making great products, and most importantly, you’re fun to work with!

Bonus points for the following:

  • You’ve worked with visualisation libraries like D3.js and Leaflet
  • You’ve worked with CMSs before and know how to make user-submitted content look nice
  • You’re familiar with making multilingual UIs using non-Latin scripts
  • You enjoy creating beautiful, nuanced browser animations with CSS or libraries
  • You have some familiarity with concepts around state management mechanisms (such as Redux, Vuex, or perhaps you rolled your own)
