Therapist - Multisystemic Therapy for Child Abuse and Neglect - Tuggerah

CatholicCare Diocese of Broken Bay

We are currently seeking to recruit an MST-CAN Therapist who wants to expand their skills in an evidence-based program, that focuses on treating families where child abuse and neglect has occurred. It involves a comprehensive approach that addresses various systems impacting the family, such as the individual, family, community, and larger social systems.

This is a permanent full-time role, based in our Tuggerah office.

It is not necessary that you are familiar with the model, as full specialised training will be provided that covers both the theoretical and practical foundations of MST-CAN, which is highly evidence base therapeutic intervention model. You will receive ongoing support through weekly group supervision, monthly individual supervision as well as external supervision and regular scheduled training in the model to ensure you are well supported in your role.

The skills acquired through MST-CAN specialist training can be applied to other MST programs worldwide, broadening career opportunities for Therapists interested in working in this field. This versatility allows you to work with a diverse population and expand your expertise in evidence-based interventions for various issues beyond child abuse and neglect.

The MST-CAN model provides therapists with a unique chance to specialise in addressing child abuse and neglect while also equipping them with transferable skills that can be valuable for their professional development and career prospects in the field of family therapy.
As the MST-CAN Therapist, you will be responsible for a small caseload of families, providing in-home and community-based interventions to reduce the impact of physical abuse and/or neglect, and to increase overall family functioning.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Master’s degree qualification in Psychology or Social Work preferred. Consideration will be given to those with a four-year degree and relevant experience in child protection.
  • Working knowledge in Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (desirable).
  • Clinical practice experience, including experience working with children and adults.
  • Substance abuse treatment for adults and children using behaviourally based approaches.
  • Trauma treatment for adults and children using exposure, cognitive therapies, and stress inoculation training.
  • Cognitive-behavioural therapy theory and application particularly in the areas of trauma treatment and anger management.
  • Effective stakeholder management skills.
  • Availability to provide periodic on-call 24-hour telephone coverage.
  • Criminal History Check and Working With Children Check.
