An exciting opportunities exists within the Central Australian Women’s Legal Service to join our legal team.

CAWLS is seeking a self-motivated candidate with high-order advocacy and written communication and problem-solving skills, demonstrated legal practice experience and a strong work ethic. We are looking for a candidate who is passionate about improving access to justice for women in Central Australia and the Barkly.

CAWLS is a busy community legal practice with a vibrant and dedicated team committed to providing representation and excellent outcomes for our clients through law reform, legal advice and representation, community legal education and outreach. Many of our clients are women who have experienced or are experiencing Domestic and Family violence.

Under the direction of the Managing Principal Solicitor, the Senior Solicitor will be engaged in legal advice, casework, outreach clinics, information and referral, community engagement, community legal education and law reform.

Excellent ongoing training and on the job support will be provided to the successful applicant.

Total effective package includes: base salary, superannuation, leave loading, relocation assistance and salary packaging options. Annual progression within the salary scale is subject to satisfactory performance.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As a Senior Solicitor with the Central Australian Women’s Legal Service, you will be working in a small but busy and tight knit team. You will assist other solicitors and have carriage of a number of your own matters.

You will be responsible for:

  • Client & file management of complex matters.
  • Drafting court documents & correspondence.
  • Attending Court including appearing in the Local Court, FDR & other tribunals.
  • Briefing and instructing Counsel.
  • Ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Supervision and mentoring junior staff.
  • Working closely with the Practice Manager.
  • Maintaining an accurate and up to date records and some data entry.

ABOUT YOU

It is crucial that you have a passion for civil law and its application in day to day life.

Please consider the following criteria carefully, and demonstrate how you address all of these qualities in your cover letter along with the selection criteria included in the Job Description:

  • Minimum 4-5 years post-admission experience in a broad range of matters, including domestic violence, family law and other civil law matters.
  • Experience working with groups who experience disadvantage.
  • Empathy and sensitivity to CALD, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.
  • The ability and inclination to take initiative.
  • Resilience (as you will be dealing with sensitive and confronting material).
  • Have superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Be able to work independently and in a team.
  • Supervision and mentoring experience.
  • Have an eye for details and strategic thinking.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Ability to dissect complex legal issues and apply them to real life scenarios.
  • Be respectful, non-judgmental and exhibit a trauma informed approach to client management.
