Context

This role sits within our Cancer Information and Support Services (CISS) Division, that aims to empower and support people affected by cancer, so that no-one need face cancer alone. This Division assists people as they navigate the cancer trajectory, easing their emotional and practical burdens and helping them make informed decisions.

CISS has identified ways to become more client centric and in doing so, reimagined the way we will work to help us be an agile and flexible workforce to give our clients a seamless experience with Cancer Council. The Division are implementing a new operating model that will change the way we approach the client experience. This new role has been introduced as part of this new initiative!

The Supportive Care team provides peer and counselling support to people affected by cancer experiencing emotional distress and is focused on addressing the psychosocial impacts of cancer.

The services offered include the provision of Cancer Counselling support, facilitation of Cancer Support Groups, Cancer Connect individual peer support, and the Cancer Council Online Community.

These services aim to provide people affected by cancer with evidence-based peer and therapeutic support to increase their coping with cancer, reduce anxiety and decrease a sense of isolation, at any stage of the cancer trajectory.

This position will lead a small team of specialists working across our Supportive Care Services and provide strategic direction, expertise and oversight to address the psychosocial impact associated with a cancer experience.

Role detail

Reporting to the Manager, Supportive Care, based primarily in the Woolloomooloo office with a balanced approach to WFH, key responsibilities of the role will see you:

  • Work across the Supportive Care team to oversee the strategic direction and operation of CCNSW’s supportive care services, ensuring these services operate in a client centric manner and aim to address and alleviate the psychosocial impacts of cancer.
  • Lead and cultivate a high performing team of supportive care and service specialists (e.g. registered counsellors, psychologists and subject matter experts) working internally and remotely)
  • Collaborate to expand the counselling program and scope further supportive care needs such as survivorship, end of life and carers.
  • Lead the review of peer support volunteer and facilitator performance and identify gaps in service, to ensure volunteer / facilitator competency in peer support provision and inform recruitment and continuity of volunteer / facilitator positions.
  • Contribute to the development and monitoring of strategic, operational, reporting and budgetary plans of the supportive care services including tracking grant funding and reporting to external stakeholders.
  • Build, maintain and oversee strong collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure efficient and effective delivery of supportive care services.
  • Be an ambassador for supportive care services and a subject matter expert in the community for cancer peer support and therapeutic counselling, including presenting at relevant conferences and other speaking opportunities

You will also need:

  • Psychology or Counselling tertiary qualifications and registration with a national peak body eg PACFA, ACA, APHRA are essential
  • Experience providing individual and group therapeutic support via telephone, online or face to face
  • Knowledge of psychosocial support
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills.
  • Demonstrated high level project management skills
  • Experience leading, managing and developing staff to achieve objectives both face to face and in a remote working environment
  • Demonstrated excellent ability to work within and manage budgetary requirements
  • Excellent presentation and networking skills
  • Experience in implementing, monitoring, evaluating and improving services/programs
  • Sound computer experience in Microsoft Programs including CRM
  • An understanding of the needs of people affected by cancer and the oncology health setting will be looked on favourably
