Context

This role sits within our Cancer Information and Support Services (CISS) Division, that aims to empower and support people affected by cancer, so that no-one need face cancer alone. This Division assists people as they navigate the cancer trajectory, easing their emotional and practical burdens and helping them make informed decisions.

CISS has identified ways to become more client centric and in doing so, reimagined the way we will work to help us be an agile and flexible workforce to give our clients a seamless experience with Cancer Council. The Division are implementing a new operating model that will change the way we approach the client experience. This new role has been introduced as part of this new initiative!

As the Training and Support Services Specialist, you will be joining the Supportive Care Services team, who provide peer and counselling support to people affected by cancer who are experiencing emotional distress, and are focused on addressing the psychosocial impacts of cancer.

Working alongside Supportive Care Specialists, this role contributes to the delivery our Supportive Care Services, and strategic direction of the Cancer Conversations training and community of practice.

The Training and Support Service Specialist also recruits, trains and manages a survivorship team of Cancer Connect peer support volunteers, to ensure competency in peer delivery of one-one telephone peer support; and facilitates training and support for Cancer Support Group Leaders and facilitators.

Role detail

Reporting to the Lead, Supportive Care, based primarily in the Woolloomooloo office with a balanced approach to WFH, key responsibilities of the role will see you:

  • Recruit and manage a survivorship team of Cancer Connect peer support volunteers, including building and maintaining relationships with these external peer support providers to review and ensure volunteer competency and continuity.
  • Develop and deliver training for peer support volunteers; cancer support group leaders / facilitators.
  • Provide operational support to peer support volunteers and cancer support group leaders / facilitators.
  • Develop and maintain an expert knowledge of key issues and effective strategies relevant to cancer survivors
  • Responsible for the strategic direction of the Cancer Conversations training and community of practice, including cross divisional engagement, service reporting and monitoring to inform continuous quality improvement.
  • Identify innovative approaches to providing peer support for people affected by cancer and develop the role of Cancer Connect in promoting and delivering survivorship peer support.
  • Contribute to the analysis of issues raised by peer support and counselling clients, and the peer support volunteers and facilitators, to inform program evaluation and improve service delivery within the Cancer Peer Support and Counselling programs and Cancer Council NSW
  • Provide program information and contribute to promotional activities, developing key health professional relationships to ensure program awareness and equity of access for people affected by cancer
  • Participate and contribute to the support and training of new Cancer Council staff
  • Contribute to overall effective operation and delivery of the Cancer Peer Support and Counselling Programs
  • Provide evidenced based information on a range of cancer types to clients accessing 131120 information and support and referred to Cancer Peer Support and Counselling Programs
  • Refer clients to relevant support services and facilitate client access to peer support and/or professional counselling in accordance with program operating guidelines.

This is a role strong on engagement - engagement with a team of Cancer Connect peer support volunteers who have survived their own experience with cancer and recruiting for those volunteer positions; cross divisional engagement; volunteer engagement; and also engaging with our leaders across the State to ensure you capture the local needs in this area. That takes the right type of person who can adapt and tailor to their audience. Who can train and lead a team of volunteers with lived experiences with empathy, and also with clear direction and focus.

You will also need:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Training and Assessment along with presentation skills and experience presenting to both professional and community audiences
  • Experience working with and/or managing volunteers
  • Experience implementing programs and/or services to improve health outcomes
  • Demonstrated skills in improving systems and processes
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
  • Experience working with clients or community members who may be experiencing high levels of distress
  • Sound computer experience in Microsoft Programs including CRM
  • Previous experience in supportive care of cancer patients and their carers
