We are seeking an experienced media and communications specialist to join our team.

You will lead and deliver the media engagement on climate change and fossil fuel issues for the Conservation Council of WA and allied advocacy organisations. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute your skills in a strategic role that is critical in addressing Australia’s fastest growing sources of carbon pollution and realising the significant economic, and employment benefits that can result from action on climate change in WA.

In collaboration with the CCWA’s top-tier communications team, this role will lead the further development and implementation of media engagement and strategic communication efforts including campaign narrative, messaging, and voices across traditional media, new media and online and offline platforms.

Position Description:

  • Reports to: Communications & Engagement Director, Executive Director
  • Hours: Full-time (38 hours a week)
  • Remuneration:A range of $70,000 - $90,000 dependent on experience
  • Contract length: 12 months with the view to extend.

DUTIES:

The Media Advisor has primary responsibility to ensure that CCWA’s strategic narrative and advocacy goals are represented prominently, regularly and positively in the media; and that the impact of other communications products is maximised. Duties to achieve this include:

  • Proactively identify and promote story ideas and media opportunities in response to news, announcements and developments that are relevant to the advocacy goals.

  • Monitor traditional and social media to identify issues, opportunities and developments that are relevant to the advocacy agenda.

  • Identify, develop, write and promote stories and cross-channel content about the range of CCWA campaigns, activities and advocacy objectives.

  • Draft copy and provide other writing support for CCWA communications (e.g., blog posts, website content, editorials social media content, brochures, flyers).

  • Demonstrate a sound technical understanding of CCWA advocacy goals and other subject matter (including policy positions, reports, publications, past media statements and stories) and use this knowledge and information to assist in creating and responding to media opportunities and requests as they arise.

  • Manage and maintain key working relationships with relevant journalists, writers and specialist reporters across all channels and mediums.

  • Develop and cultivate a diverse range of experts and spokespeople to generate, comment on, or present media stories in ways that support the advocacy objectives.

  • Track media hits, reporting and relevant mentions; compile reports on media coverage, and maintain a database of media stories on issues relevant to the advocacy goals that is accessible to members of the CCWA team.

  • Provide media advice and training on both a formal and informal basis for staff as required.

  • Other duties as directed.

As a Team Member:

  • Attend team meetings to discuss media opportunities, priorities and objectives with other members of the team,

  • Provide regular advice and feedback to other team members on the status of media pitches, proposals and responses that are being received from media

  • Participate in whole of team meetings and activities

  • Participate in objective setting, performance management

  • Participate in special projects to improve processes, tools, systems and organisation

SELECTION CRITERIA:

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • Proven abilities in media engagement for advocacy campaigns

  • Experience engaging and coordinating third party voices and spokespeople across a range of different sectors

  • A strong grasp of policy and decision-making processes in government, political parties and the corporate environment and how these processes are affected by campaign and advocacy communications.

  • Established contacts and relationships in the media especially in Western Australia

  • Experience and skills in creative content creation

  • Ability to deliver outcomes in a timely way as part of a driven team working in a dynamic and high-pressure campaign environment

Desirable:

  • A demonstrated technical knowledge of fossil fuel developments and climate change issues in Western Australia

  • Experience in the area of energy, climate change and/or fossil fuel issues.
