CCWA is seeking a multi-disciplinary research and policy specialist with excellent professional writing and communication skills to support our advocacy goals, with a primary focus on fossil fuels and climate change.
This position leads our research and policy development work, undertakes analysis, engages with stakeholders, prepares publications and submissions, and provides technical information to assist planning and delivery of CCWA’s strategic communications and campaigns.
The position would suit a highly efficient and motivated multidisciplinary researcher or policy analyst who can turn their skills to a broad range of subject matter, including financial, economic and legal analysis, environmental impact assessment, corporate governance and disclosure; and is familiar with policy on climate change, petroleum developments, energy markets, employment and environmental protection.
Essential criteria
A demonstrated understanding of climate change and energy policy, economics and politics, especially at the State level in Western Australia.
Demonstrated capacity to consult, influence and liaise with internal and external stakeholders.
Possess a drive to make change and achieve results, with a demonstrated track record of innovation and flexibility, ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities.
Excellent professional communication skills, especially the ability to write clearly and succinctly in a range of contexts (including reports, briefings, submissions, media releases and online communications).
Ability to work with minimal supervision as part of a small team in a fast-paced environment. This includes effective organisational and time management skills.
Desirable criteria
Recent experience in gas industry and energy market analysis, or related areas of policy and law here in Western Australia
Experience consulting and working with Traditional Owners
Legal or commerce background
Experience in environmental impact assessment and regulation
Develop, lead and manage a program of research, analysis and policy development by:
Creating and responding to opportunities to advance CCWA’s advocacy goals, such as government policy processes and decisions,
Providing information and research that can be used as part of a compelling communications and engagement strategy.
Tracking relevant policy development processes
Provide robust, technically sound research and policy products including acting as a lead author on major reports, submissions and other publications to support CCWA’s advocacy work. This includes:
Delivering planned products and outputs on agreed timeframes as well as providing reactive capacity on an as-needs basis as opportunity and needs arise.
Commission and manage reports and other products from third parties.
Providing ad-hoc policy and technical advice on an as needs basis to support advocacy, communication and engagement efforts.
Act as a spokesperson where a policy voice is required as part of a CCWA communications and advocacy strategy. This includes:
Speaking with media on behalf of the Council
Providing presentations to online and in-person audiences
Maintain a comprehensive working knowledge of the policy and research landscape relevant to CCWA’s advocacy work on climate change and fossil fuels, including:
WA State Government policy development processes and timelines.
Assessment and approvals processes for planned fossil fuel projects in WA.
Advocacy activities being undertaken by other organisations and stakeholders including at the national level and international level, such as NGO groups, academic institutions and fossil fuel and other industry organisations.
Develop and maintain stakeholder relationships with relevant experts, practitioners and stakeholders and consult as necessary to ensure that CCWA’s research and policy products receive endorsement and actively seek opportunities for collaboration and joint research and advocacy with other organisations that are aligned with our goals.
Manage staff and volunteers as necessary to assist with above program of work including;
The development of individualised work plans
Participation in recruitment processes
Coaching staff and supporting them to achieve their KPI's
