Legal / Industrial Officer

The successful candidate will work in a team of dedicated legal/industrial officers committed to the values and principles of unionism, and advancing the cause of the CFMEU and its members.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor with current New South Wales practicing certificate
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office, Outlook, Adobe and related programs
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Minimum 3 years’ relevant experience desirable
  • Advocacy experience desirable
  • Employment and industrial law experience desirable.

Key responsibilities:

Responsible for management of own legal caseload within national framework including:

  • All aspects of case preparation, management and appearances in industrial tribunals (e.g. Fair Work Commission / NSW Industrial Relations Commission) and courts, including briefing counsel
  • Providing legal advice and assistance to CFMEU members, organisers and executive in New South Wales regarding all manner of industrial and employment law matters, including workplace disputes, dismissals, underpayment claims, protected action ballots, industrial action, enterprise agreements and awards, right of entry etc
  • Dealing with regulatory authorities (e.g. Fair Work Commission, SafeWork etc.)
  • Interacting and liaising with legal/industrial officers from other CFMEU branches and other unions
  • Researching and writing submissions on issues that affect members of the CFMEU
  • General legal practitioner duties.
