The Centre for Conservation Geography is looking for a conservation scientist with expertise in GIS, map making, conservation planning, and writing, with a good understanding of Australian environments and advocacy campaigns to join our team. 

Key Details

Location: This position is based in Byron Bay. Remote work within a virtual team environment may be possible once work plans and research projects mature, but we are ideally looking for someone who would like to work with the team in person.

Tenure: This is a part time 12-month fixed term contract with a 3-month probationary trial period. The contract may be extended beyond 12 months for the right person. (Note: The start date is flexible in consideration of Covid-19 restrictions). 

Salary / Wages: $30.17- 40.10 per hour plus leave and superannuation loading dependent on skills and experience. 

Hours: 3-4 days per week (negotiable)

The Centre for Conservation Geography is an interdisciplinary research consultancy established in 2011 to provide expert technical support and advice to government and non-government stakeholders. Our focus is on applying world's best practice and decision support for optimised biodiversity conservation outcomes. Based in Australia, our multi-disciplinary team works to support to conservation decisions being made across the world's eco regions.

We currently have projects in Australia, the Southern Ocean, and Canada across all types of marine and terrestrial environments. Our areas of expertise include protected area design and performance assessment and data driven support and solutions for campaigns and environmental issues, including mapping, statistical analyses, in depth-reports, and innovative tools.

Skills required

  • You will be required to use GIS and decision support software to analyse, assess, visualise, and summarise environmental data to support conservation planning and decision making. 
  • You will be adept in liaising with and briefing clients and will have the ability to communicate effectively to deliver products that meet their needs
  • You will have the ability to juggle multiple simultaneous projects, work efficiently to deadlines and be confident at working both independently and collaboratively.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collate data for conducting spatial analyses and design maps using GIS software (primarily ArcGIS)
  • Provide conservation planning and decision support using relevant planning tools and software (e.g. Marxan)
  • Analyse data to describe the values of areas and support conservation planning and decision-making processes
  • Produce publishable maps, infographics and other data visualisation products that can be used for conservation planning or science communication
  • Generate independent ideas on how to analyse and present information for advocacy including for Traditional Owners, not-for-profit organisations, government decisions makers, the public and other stakeholders
  • Liaise with other scientists and GIS specialists as necessary to inform the work
  • Actively participate in a virtual team, including contributing thoughts and ideas to projects and organisational direction, delegating tasks and managing project deadlines
  • Execute and deliver high quality products independently and in a timely manner

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

Qualifications:

  • Tertiary qualification in ecology, geography, environmental science, natural resource management, marine biology, geographic information science or an associated field and/or
  • Education or professional experience in conservation planning, GIS analysis and/or analysis for environmental decision making 

Essential skills and experience

The applicant should have the following skills and experience:

GIS and data management experience:

  • Demonstrated advanced experience with GIS software, preferably ESRI ArcMap, to analyse data, design compelling maps and present the results in a clear and concise manner

Analytical thinking and research skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to find, analyse, and summarise complex information, and take creative approaches to problem solving
  • Ability to apply design principles to create high-quality maps that effectively communicate a message/story 

Well-developed time and project management skills:

  • Proven project management skills, including ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and clearly communicate progress
  • Ability to prioritise, organise and schedule time critical workloads
  • Capacity to work independently and take initiative with minimal supervision

Team and communication skills:

  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a both an in-person and virtual team
  • High level communication and interpersonal skill
  • Strong organisational skills, including data management, shared databases, and online filing
