  • Salary Range: $70,794 to $111,736 (effective 1st Dec 2020). Salary is determined on level of skills and experience
  • Accountability: The position is accountable to the Branch Secretary through the relevant Team Leader

CPSU SPSF group covers workers in the Victorian public service and public sector. Our members come from a range of diverse and exciting workplaces including, Victorian State Government Departments, Prisons, Arts agencies, Parks & Gardens, Zoos and many more. CPSU organisers are encouraged to utilise a range of different tools to assist our delegates and members with workplace matters. Experienced organisers will be able to use their creative thinking and problem-solving skills to empower their members within their portfolio coverage. 

The successful applicant will be required to provide strategic and high quality industrial and policy advice to the union’s Leadership. It will support the operationalisation and implementation of the Gender Equality Act (Vic) and the associated EBA provisions that call up the Act to assist members in managing Gender Equity claims and disputes.

This is a new role that will assist the union’s members understand the new Gender Equality Act and will be responsible for co-ordinating the union’s role across all VPS and Public Sector employers covered by the Act.

The Act coupled with the new VPS EBA and of the public sector EBA’s sets a new precedent for the management of Gender Equality issues and, importantly, processes for dealing with the gender pay gap.

DUTIES

  1. Map agencies, sites or regions identifying membership density, level of organisation, contacts/activists/delegates, and establishing a union template for accessing Gender related issues including barriers to gender equity and the closing of the gender pay gap. Identify organising opportunities around gender issues, growth potential based on identified issues and key contacts.
  2. As part of a team develop campaign plans and organising plans including timeframes, objectives and targets for membership growth based on gender equity issues.
  3. Develop individual organising plans with the Team Leaders and report against the objectives in these plans as required. 
  4. Contribute to campaigns or team or individual organising with activities such as planning, workplace visits programs, bulletin writing, phone campaigning, surveys, leafleting, running meetings, presenting learning modules, one-on one education, maintaining files and organising records.
  5. Identify members who have the capacity to be union activists and delegates. Encourage and support them to take on union tasks and become fully effective trained union delegates. 
  6. Provide advice on the application of the Gender Equity Act and the various EBA clauses dealing with gender equality in employment conditions and employment rights.
  7. Negotiate with management or appear as advocate as part of representing members in a gender equity dispute. Developing delegates through specialised training programs to negotiate and advocate for members on gender equity issues.
  8. Recruit new members to CPSU. Produce bulletins and information sessions via webinars and other modes of delivery on rights and entitlements under the Act and the various agreements. Apply communication skills such as active listening and respecting different employee opinions. Develop organising approaches so that members and delegates are recruiting and building the union themselves.
  9. Identify your own development and training needs and communicate any work issues or difficulties to the Lead Organiser.
  10. Work and communicate positively with all elements of the CPSU SPSF operation. Show respect and consideration for all staff and raise any difficulties directly with the staff member concerned first.
  11. Good working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, Public Administration Act, Gender Equality Act and the Fair Work Act is desirable.
  12. Keep our membership database OMS up to date with current delegates, contacts and Branch Sections.
  13. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written and exceptional trouble shooting and problem solving abilities. 
  14. Experience in advocating before various Tribunals, particularly on gender pay claims would be advantageous.
  15. Proven ability to represent the union at various Tribunals such as FWC on a case by case basis.
  16. Efficient use of office computer systems.
