The Dambimangari Native Title Determination covers 16,040 square kilometres of land and 11,896 square kilometres of sea country in the remote North Kimberley, dotted with more than 720 islands. Led by the Elders and the Dambimangari Aboriginal Corporation, Traditional Owners are working to continue to build a successful future for their people, drawing on the strong links between the land and the Dambimangari identity. The Corporation uses funds from Native Title agreements, government, and business investments to provide:

• Conservation and land management activities;
• Cultural programs and return to country trips;
• Business development;
• Employment and training initiatives;
• Subsidised medical and health services;
• Education support and collaboration with tertiary education campuses;
• Household goods for Dambimangari people; and
• Funding for hardship relief

About the role

Want to work with Indigenous Rangers in some of the most spectacular, remote stretches of the Kimberley coast?

This is a hands-on role that manages a team of Indigenous Rangers to conduct conservation and, land & sea management activities in some of the most spectacular, remote parts of the Kimberley. Ranger work includes fire management, feral animal & weed control, threatened species programs, cultural and knowledge transfer activities, infrastructure & asset management.

You will work closely with the Healthy Country Program Manager, Cultural Advisors, and partner organisations to plan, implement, and monitor the land & sea management program in accordance with the Dambimangari Healthy Country Plan and Strategic Plan. This includes:

• Managing all aspects of ranger operations including work planning, budgeting, staffing, logistics and on-ground delivery;
• Extensive field work in extremely remote locations, often in hot, harsh conditions (at least 10 on country trips per year, 5 - 10 days duration);
• Managing a team of Indigenous Rangers, including day to day supervision, rosters, training & development;
• Completing reports, presentations and other communications to members and other stakeholders; and
• Building partnerships that increase opportunities and empower Dambimangari people to access and manage their land & sea country.

About you

We’re looking for a pro-active and enthusiastic candidate, with experience in community development or Indigenous-led conservation. We’re looking for someone who is passionate about working in the remote Kimberley region and building the capacity of Indigenous Rangers. Cultural competency of Indigenous culture and/or demonstrated respect and understanding of Aboriginal communities is highly desirable. You will also have the following demonstrated abilities:

• Self-motivated, able to take initiative and work autonomously;
• Strong initiative, brilliant at problem solving and providing tailored, practical solutions;
• Enthusiastic, fit, and willing to work in remote locations, with hot, humid and, harsh conditions;
• Passionate about upskilling & empowering Indigenous people to manage their country;
• Familiar with the challenges of remote community life in Northern West Australia;
• Flexible and able to work under pressure in very remote locations;
• Strong inter-personal skills, high emotional intelligence & ability to motivate a team; and
• An ability to obtain and maintain a Working with Children Check, National Police Clearance, a current valid Western Australian Driver’s Licence, and First Aid Certificate.

Relevant experience in marine operations with at least certification as AMSA Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal is highly desirable.
