Djerriwarrh Community & Education Services (Djerriwarrh) is a highly regarded not-for-profit charitable organisation which has been delivering high quality education, training, employment and youth programs in the western suburbs of Melbourne since 1989. Program:

The Reconnect program strives to support Victorians experiencing disadvantage. The program assists participants to overcome the barriers preventing them from engaging in education and training and provides support into further study or employment pathways.

Participant eligibility include the following:

Young People: Aged 17 – 19 years and not engaged in education or training for six months or more (not engaged is defined as studying or working less than 8 hours per week).

Mature People: Aged between 20-64 and unemployed for six months or more (working less than 8 hours per week) and not engaged in education or training for six months or more (studying less than 8 hours per week).

Young People Impacted by the Justice System: Aged 17 – 24 years who have been, or are currently on, Youth Justice Orders.

Asylum Seekers: Aged 17-64: A person without citizenship but holds a valid Bridging Visa Class E (BVE); or Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (SHEV); or Temporary Protection Visa (TPV).

Participants are allocated a Reconnect Coach who will assist them to complete an educational course to improve their employment opportunities.

Reconnect is offered by Djerriwarrh Community & Education Services across the local government areas of Melton, Brimbank and Moorabool.

Funding for Skills First Reconnect is provided by the Victorian Government through the Department of Education and Training.

Role:

  • Reconnect Coach will proactively target referral agencies and use outreach strategies to engage and support a number of severely disengaged young people and other vulnerable groups.
  • Reconnect Coach will use motivational coaching methods to maintain engagement and actively support participants in pursuit of their learning goals.
  • Reconnect Coach will address vocational and personal barriers through individual coaching, mentoring and capacity building activities that engage participants in experiential learning to develop literacy, numeracy, learning and employability skills in practical, authentic and meaningful contexts including: guided career exploration, trade/work tasters, work experience and coaching to obtain Learner Driver Permits.
  • Reconnect Coach will broker practical solutions to barriers such as transport, childcare and connectivity.
  • Reconnect Coach will refer participants to specialist agencies as required for wrap-around support to address personal barriers, monitoring engagement, progress and outcomes.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • A qualification in Youth Work, Social Work, Psychology, Career Development or equivalent
  • Working With Children Check
  • Current Drivers Licence
  • Administrative skills including data entry and word processing
