Deakin’s Faculty of Health is recognised in Australia and internationally for its teaching, training, research and service to its communities. Working within the School of Medicine, the Senior Lecturer, Indigenous Health Professional Education, will make a major personal contribution to the development and delivery of learning and assessment activities in the Indigenous Health curriculum theme in the MD course. It will also provide expert advice to educators in other programs in the School. The appointee will make an independent contribution to the School and Faculty’s teaching and assessment, research or scholarship, program development, and relevant service activities, with a particular focus on Indigenous learning and teaching.

The Senior Lecturer will interact with staff and students within the School of Medicine and local Aboriginal communities. Working with other academic staff within both the Indigenous Health Theme and other themes within the MD course, and with senior academic and administrative staff within the School, the appointee will assist with the teaching and assessment within the MD course. In addition, expert advice will be provided by the appointee to educators in other School of Medicine courses.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Make a major contribution to the design, implementation and evaluation of learning and assessment activities in the Indigenous Health curriculum theme of the MD course.
  • Provide expert advice on Indigenous health curriculum, pedagogy and assessment to educators across the School’s courses.
  • Contribute significantly to the development and implementation of experiential learning opportunities in Indigenous health services and other clinical settings relevant to the development of Indigenous health expertise.
  • Undertake and disseminate scholarly work in Indigenous health professional education.
  • Undertake and publish disciplinary research where appropriate.
  • Make a major contribution to the further development and implementation of Indigenous student recruitment and retention across the School’s courses.
  • Support the development and maintenance of links and partnerships with the community organisations and professional bodies, including in rural and regional areas.
  • Participate in School, Faculty and University committees and undertake other duties as reasonably directed by the Dean of Medicine, Executive Dean (Health), PVC Indigenous Strategy, and Innovation.

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Masters level qualification or equivalent relevant professional and lived experience.
  • Ability to support the development of curriculum, learning and assessment activities and resources that reflect a deep understanding of Indigenous health.
  • Ability to contribute effectively to the School’s programs in a manner that influences, motivates, and inspires all students, but particularly Indigenous students, to learn.
  • Experience in developing innovative curricula and educational resources that reflect an understanding of the practicalities of Indigenous health practice.
  • Ability to undertake scholarly activity in Indigenous health professional education, including the preparation of high-quality written work.
  • An established knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and the issues affecting Indigenous people in contemporary Australian society.
  • A demonstrated ability to build and maintain credible, consultative and culturally sensitive working relationships with Australia’s First Peoples.
  • Demonstrated collaborative capabilities and the ability to mentor junior colleagues and Indigenous students.
  • Ability to implement strategies and structures to recruit and support Indigenous students.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work within the social, political and cultural environments of Indigenous Australians and relevant organisations.
