Desart Inc

DESART & the SAM – Stories Art Money - Platform

Aboriginal Art Centres are important community places. They are innovative and vibrant spaces where culture is kept strong, transferred from old to young, and shared with the world. They are community-based enterprises, owned and managed by Aboriginal people in their communities, and provide economic, social and cultural benefits.

Based in Alice Springs, Desart has been providing advocacy and support services for Central Desert Aboriginal Art Centres for over twenty-five years. We are a not-for-profit peak arts body for 37 Aboriginal art centres, representing artists from 16 language groups.

The SAM - Stories Art Money - Platform is an online artwork management and archival system that Desart developed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait art centres nationwide. The platform extends beyond the Desart membership to be a national artist, artwork and collection management system. In total 102 ATSI art centres use SAM and we now have an opportunity to expand the SAM team to include a Communications & Training Coordinator.

The opportunity

In this role you will provide SAM training and customer support to our clients, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art centre staff nationwide. It will involve co-ordinating the annual training schedule, liaising with stakeholders to assess their training needs and developing training resources where required. The Communications & Training Coordinator will also be responsible for co-ordinating the SAM Train the Trainer course, with previously certified SAM Trainers. The role may involve interstate travel to art centres and events to deliver face to face training.

You will be the key communicator for SAM updates and e-news with an eye for design and layout. You will also be responsible for developing and editing online training resources and summarising information for training so skills or experience in communications, IT, media or digital resource creation is beneficial.

General customer service (responding to emails and phone enquiries), troubleshooting and triaging issues with the SAM team and other general administrative tasks are also required.

Ideally you will have prior experience or knowledge of the SAM Platform or similar archival and cataloguing databases, as well as experience in IT Training. This role would be suited to someone who has worked in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art centres. Candidates with experience in art centres, museum archives, collections and cataloguing, database servers, IT training, digital resource creation, or the arts industry more broadly, are also encouraged to apply.

Why us?

We are passionate about ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art centres remain sustainable and vital cultural, social and economic resources. Values-driven people passionate about supporting community driven, arts-based community development are encouraged to apply.

You will be part of a small, committed team who work both onsite in Alice Springs and remotely. You will benefit from our salary sacrificing, 6 weeks annual leave, additional COVID leave, relocation assistance and opportunities for training.
