MHAS has Advocates appointed in the Perth metropolitan area, Albany, Broome, Bunbury and Kalgoorlie. Youth Advocates are based in the metropolitan area.
Contracts may be issued for a maximum of 3 years and can be extended. Paid training is provided on commencement.
The Youth Mental Health Advocate role includes advocating for and protecting the rights of children and some categories of young people (18-24 years); individual and systemic advocacy; visiting children and young people in mental health wards, medical wards, emergency departments and community clinics; representing them in Mental Health Tribunal hearings; writing reports; attending meetings, case conferences and interagency meetings; making presentations; and maintaining a case management database.
Working hours are not “9 to 5” and can be very flexible, but there are some restrictions as Tribunal hearings and some meetings may be scheduled at short notice. Children who are made involuntary must be seen by a Youth Advocate within 24hrs.
