About the role

drummond street services (ds) delivers responsive, intentional and evidence-based prevention, early intervention and treatment programs, within a public health framework for a range of communities, including a range of programs for LGBTIQA+ individuals, families and communities. We strive to build and enhance the innate resilience of children, young people, adults, their families and communities and to increase protective factors. drummond street services has been funded to deliver mental health support for LGBTIQ+ people and their families. The Mental Health Recovery Support Worker will work alongside Care Coordinators to provide mental health and wellbeing and case management services and group interventions to LGBTIQ+ people and their families within DSS’ Family Services Model of Practice. 

A Recovery Support Worker is an LGBTIQ+ person with a lived experience of mental health issues who would like to help others with a similar lived experience. They will bring to the role a personal understanding of the importance of resilience and the recovery process. A Care Coordinator will support the Recovery Support Worker to successfully carry out one-on-one client case work, facilitate group peer support and develop and deliver recovery education training.

Your responsibilities

  • Provide queer sensitive and affirmative mental health counselling and case management services to LGBTIQ+ clients and their families.
  • Share expertise and knowledge with clients to support their recovery.
  • Support clients to build positive mental health and relationships.
  • Support clients to set goals and work alongside the Care Coordinator to develop and implement individual case plans.
  • Assist with housing, income, education and employment needs.
  • Assist in building social and community supports and connections.
  • Refer clients to internal and external support services to meet their needs.
  • Support the development and delivery of groups that promote LGBTIQ+ mental health and well-being.

About you 

  • A lived experience and understanding of the impact of mental health issues on health and wellbeing 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Basic administration and information technology skills
  • Sound group facilitation skills 

Selection Criteria

  • A lived experience and understanding of the impact of mental health issues on health and wellbeing 
  • A strong personal/professional support network that promotes resilience
  • Involved and actively participating in the local community
  • A commitment to and/or experience in working with people from LGBTIQ+ communities
  • An interest in or demonstrated experience in running group programs 
  • Demonstrated understanding of the needs, issues and sensitivities of people from diverse backgrounds including Aboriginal, LGBTIQ and culturally and linguistically diverse people and communities

Highly Desirable

  • You identify as belonging to one or more of the communities with whom ds assertively engages
