About Tiwi College and Melville Island

Located at Pickataramoor on Melville Island, Tiwi College is an exciting and dynamic secondary boarding school initiated and governed by the Tiwi people to provide quality education for the young Tiwi. The college caters for holistic learning; helping the young Tiwi become "work ready". At Tiwi College, the life skills learned in the Family Group Homes are valued as highly as the academic programs.

A weekly boarding school, where students are dropped off on a Monday and picked up on a Friday, the school IS the community of Pickataramoor. The school currently has over 100 students and 50 staff consisting of Teachers, Tiwi Assistant Teachers, Tiwi Academy staff, Family Group Home (boarding) Parents, Hospitality staff, a Fleet Manager, Farm Manager, Maintenance Manager and Groundsman. It is a very close-knit community and as a relatively new school, Tiwi College is well resourced for both staff and students.

Melville Island, part of the Tiwi Islands, lies in the eastern Timor Sea, off the coast of the Northern Territory, Australia. It is west of the Cobourg Peninsula in Arnhem Land and north of Darwin, with a tropical climate. Second only to Tasmania in area, it has a population of just 800 people. As a result, the tropical wilderness and secluded beaches are readily accessible, with most staff enjoying weekend camping and fishing.

Are you ready for a career change that inspires?

Tiwi College is now seeking expressions of interest for ClassroomTeachers to join their dynamic academic team for the 2022 school year. Work with either junior, middle, or senior school students depending on your strengths.

You will oversee the curriculum planning, implementation of learning programs and the provision of the primary well-being of students in your care. You will provide initial behaviour management techniques embracing 'Calmer Classrooms', 'Restorative Practice' and Berry Street Model approaches.

You will also work closely alongside your assistant teacher, mentoring them to potentially achieve their teaching qualification. Assistant teachers are Tiwi community members who will provide you and the class with culturally specific education and support.

Core duties:

  • Undertake curriculum development and planning of programs with appropriate scope and sequence to meet students’ needs and government requirements;
  • Implement specific literacy and numeracy programs adopted by the College;
  • Work within the Northern Territory Curriculum Framework/Australian Curriculum & Assessment;
  • plan or directly supervise weekly homework sessions; and
  • Drive college vehicles for student transport or as directed by the Principal or delegate.

What you need to succeed

To be successful in this position, you will need to be a tertiary qualified primary or secondary trained teacher with registration to teach in the NT and/or the ability to obtain this registration prior to commencement.

Ideally, you will have some previous experience in a teaching role and/or working with students who have come from difficult backgrounds. Your previous experience, however, is far less important than the right attitude and cultural fit for the school.

This role will not suit someone with a disciplinarian approach. Rather, Tiwi College is looking for an empathetic, resilient and caring person who is flexible in their thinking and approach and who can adapt to changing circumstances. You will have a genuine desire to listen to and build real relationships with the young people in your care and the greater community, ensuring parents feel welcome and involved in their children's progress.

As you will be required to drive a 4WD at times, an open, manual driver's license will also be highly regarded.

Please note: prior to commencing with Tiwi College, you will need to have received at least your first dose of COVID vaccination, with plans to receive the second dose.
