CAWLS is a community legal practice with a vibrant and dedicated integrated team. We are committed to providing excellent outcomes for our clients through law reform, legal advice and representation, non-legal wrap-around support, community legal education and outreach. Many of our clients are women who have experienced or are experiencing Domestic and Family Violence.
CAWLS operates two Commonwealth funded Specialist Domestic Violence Units/Health Justice Partnerships based in Alice Springs and Tennant Creek. CAWLS provides ongoing education and training for health service providers to identify and respond to disclosures of family violence through these units.
Because of an exciting period of growth for our organisation, CAWLS is now seeking a self-motivated Senior Solicitor to join our small but busy and tight-knit team in Alice Springs, NT. We are looking for a passionate solicitor to improve access to justice for women in Central Australia and the Barkly by breaking down the barriers between health and legal services.
Under the direction of the Managing Principal Solicitor, you will provide legal advice, casework, outreach clinics, information and referral, community engagement, community legal education and law reform.
You will have the opportunity to be a leader within our organisation, assist other solicitors, and have a carriage of your matters.
This is a rewarding opportunity to help women and families who's lives have been negatively impacted by domestic violence, and you will be on the front lines of providing the essential service of legal assistance to those in need.
This is a fantastic opportunity to make your mark on an essential community organisation providing help to women.
You will receive a competitive salary of circa $95,000 - $106,923, and benefit from 12% super, six weeks annual leave, and an additional 12 days personal leave. Relocation assistance is also available if you are moving from interstate.
You will also benefit from an outstanding work/life balance, with flexible conditions available per your role's requirements.
We are committed to providing ongoing training and on-the-job support to ensure you succeed in your new role. You will have the full support of an experienced, enthusiastic, and highly collaborative team.
To be successful in this role, you will need demonstrated post-admission experience. Experience in domestic violence, family law, or civil law will help you hit the ground running. You will also need the ability to work autonomously, managing your caseload and deadlines effectively.
You will be passionate about civil law and producing excellent outcomes for the women who come to us for help. Experience working with disadvantaged or disenfranchised groups will be advantageous for this role.
At CAWLS, we use a trauma-informed approach, which you will contribute to with your respectful and non-judgmental approach to client work. You also will need strong advocacy skills and excellent communication and problem-solving ability.
Please note that this role is open to female-identifying applicants only due to the nature of the position. Please note as well that this role regularly deals with emotionally distressing circumstances. As such, a personal commitment to reflection and self-care to build resilience and minimise the impact of vicarious trauma is essential.
An applicant's gender is a genuine occupational requirement of this position, authorised by s35 of the NT Anti-Discrimination Act and Division 4 (s30, ss1 & ss2a,c,g,e,& h) of the Sex Discrimination Act 1984.
Although traditionally regarded as a small, dusty town with a few rustic buildings, Alice Springs today offers all the modern urban town's shopping, sightseeing, and entertainment facilities. We are home to a thriving arts community and a wealth of adventure opportunities.
In addition to its rich history and diverse cultural heritage, you can explore the local sports teams, photography, camping, hiking, motorsports, desert racing and more, whilst benefiting from the relaxed country atmosphere, fantastic weather and internationally-renowned environment.
