About the role

EFFA is in a time of change and transition. Coming out of 2020 and onto running our 11th in person festival, we’re looking for a new co-Director to help lead EFFA’s vision and guide us into the next stage of our future.

The key responsibilities for the Development Director in 2021 will be to manage and increase the financial security of the festival (through oversight of the relevant team members), create and implement a development plan for EFFA, secure funding for the festival and ongoing projects, engage in key partnerships and development work and work with the team to agree and plan our ongoing
strategy and goals for the future.

The Development Director will be part of a project with the wider team to set our vision, ensuring that EFFA lives up to its values and is consistently working towards our agreed outcomes. Underneath this position sits the Finance, Fundraising & Grants, Sustainability and Impact teams. This Directorate is crucial for ensuring EFFA stays true to itself, is sustainable (both as an organisation and in our
impact on the planet), and is financially sound.

This is a voluntary position, with the possibility of extending. The average time commitment is approximately 8 hours per week, with more time required closer to the festival. Hours will vary and are generally flexible to suit around your other commitments. You will be predominantly working remotely, with regular meetings in Melbourne throughout the year.

About EFFA

The Environmental Film Festival Australia (EFFA) is an entirely volunteer-run organisation, operating in Melbourne since 2010.

EFFA is more thana film festival – we're a catalyst for positive and sustainable change. We inform, inspire, entertain and educate audiences of all ages, sharing films from around the world. Our key mission is to showcase great cinema and art that celebrates nature, flora, fauna and wildlife, champions the people, organisations and projects protecting our environment, and illustrates the unprecedented global threats our world faces, such as climate change, food sustainability, habitat loss and pollution.

Following record attendance in 2019, with the festival hosting more than 20 screenings, alongside panel discussions, parties and special events, 2020 saw us turning digital. In October, we hosted our first ever science/science-fiction based online festival, with participants zooming in from across the world. This year, our festival is set to take place in October.

About you

You’re a big-picture thinker, with a passion for the environment and the arts. You’ll be excited at the prospect of working internally to bring the whole EFFA team on a journey to set our vision for the future.

We’re pretty broad in what we’re looking for in experience, you could be coming from a development, partnerships or fundraising background, or more of an organisational development and strategy side. You do, however, have a broad knowledge of development, fundraising and grant writing and are skilled at making connections and growing relationships.

As we’re all volunteers, we work with good humour and understanding; you’re an empathetic, strong leader, who works well with others and loves a bit of autonomy. You are excited to take on a role where you can steer the EFFA ship and have a real impact on the
organisation and our future.

Key selection criteria

Essential

• Tertiary degree in business, marketing or a relevant discipline, or equivalent relevant industry experience
• Minimum of three years’ fundraising or development experience, with a proven track record of delivering successful fundraising campaigns and securing new revenue streams.
• Relationships and contacts with relevant philanthropic organisations and/or donors.
• Experience in leadership, or ability to undertake a leadership position
• Proven experience in delivering successful and dynamic fundraising and development campaigns.
• Highly developed written communications skills and the ability to think creatively.
• Strong stakeholder management skills, with experience working with diverse groups to achieve shared goals.
• An interest in contemporary environmental issues at a local, national and international level

Desirable

• Knowledge of and experience in the not-for-profit regulatory environment in Australia
• A passion for film, particularly documentaries, shorts and issues-based cinema
• Experience in the arts, film, festivals and/or community organisations
