About the role:

This exciting leadership opportunity plays a significant role in service coordination and supporting staff within a small team, to ensure high-quality service that responds to community needs.

The Senior Lawyer will provide legal assistance to clients in key practice areas of law including family violence, child protection and family law, along with other areas relevant to disadvantaged communities, such as summary crime and civil law.

You will attend outreach court locations to provide advice, consultations, and casework while working with community services and partners to provide clients with wrap-around legal services. This role involves networking and community engagement, with the opportunity to address systemic issues through strategic partnerships.

Reporting to the Practice Manager, your responsibilities include the following:

• Provide legal assistance to clients by way of information, referral, advice, and casework.
• With a focus on therapeutic practices, build and maintain referral pathways and operational relationships with courts and local service delivery partners to achieve better outcomes for clients.
• Deliver duty lawyer services at relevant regional courts and provide place-based services at partner organisations.
• Report on project/program goals and service targets and identify and develop community engagement and legal education opportunities.
• Day-to-day induction, supervision, work plans, training and mentoring of junior staff and volunteers.
• Monitor casework to identify systemic issues and feed this information into the service’s strategic plan and work plans.

About you:

Your skill set will include:

• Eligible for an unsupervised Practicing Certificate in Victoria and experience providing legal advice, casework, and representation, in one or more areas of law relevant to disadvantaged communities.
• Previous Duty Lawyer experience with court and tribunal advocacy.
• Demonstrated experience in supervising and/or mentoring staff and volunteers.
• Ability to build trust and rapport with stakeholders (staff/partners/clients).
• Analytical skills, problem-solving and high attention to detail.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
• Flexible work ethic with the ability to ‘think on your feet’.
