The Fire Brigade Employees’ Union (FBEU) is seeking applicants for the role of Organiser.

The FBEU represents professional firefighters in NSW. We are a high-density union with a proud, militant history and culture and a highly democratic structure. FBEU Members work in diverse jobs and face a variety of industrial challenges.

We are led by a State Committee of Management and we employ a small team to support members and the work of the union.

We are a high-density union and so organising is a bit different at the FBEU. Your work will be dynamic and responsive to the decisions of the leadership and membership of the union. You will be part of a team working on an overarching organising plan. Supporting elected officials to carrying out the work of the union and building union power will be central to your role.

You will be part of a team that carries out the work of organising and campaigns, building and maintaining delegate structures, online organising, member events and actions, supporting elected leaders in their roles, and working with members around collective issues to win.

The union operates in line with its rules and our work is driven by the decision making of members.

You will work as part of a team who are passionate unionists. We value the role of delivering the work as decided by the members through the structures of the union.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide organising support and advice to elected leaders and other staff.
  • Identify and run collective organising matters with members.
  • Provide support, advice and representation for individuals and groups of members.
  • Carry out the work of whole of union campaigns and organising.
  • Identify and support delegates and leaders both informally and through formal training.
  • Systematically visit members in their workplaces.
  • Contribute to member communications.
  • Assist with organising member events, actions and activities.
  • Other activities as reasonably requested by the leadership.

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  • Commitment to the union movement and our values.
  • Experience in union or related organising and campaigning.
  • Ability to plan and organise work and achieve outcomes.
  • Proven ability to listen, engage and work individuals and groups through issues and challenges to find solutions.
  • Ability to develop members, including motivating and educating others
  • Ability to identify workplace delegates as well build and maintain delegate structures.
  • Ability to identify organising opportunities and support members.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and with union members and to apply organising and union building principles to all you do.
  • Drivers’ Licence and willingness to travel within NSW.

Desirable:

  • Some negotiation experience both for individuals and collectives.

Pay and conditions:

Pay is commensurate with qualifications, skills and experience. There are generous terms and conditions including fortnightly RDOs.

Our office is based in Surry Hills – organisers spend most of their time out and about and the organiser will be expected to travel throughout NSW as required.
