about the role

The Federation University Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) and Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) are currently seeking expressions of interest for the following categories of membership:

  • Lay people who have no affiliation with Federation University and do not currently engage in medical, scientific, legal or academic work, and do not currently, and have not previously, conducted experiments using animals;
  • Person or people with current experience in the professional care, counselling or treatment of people; for example, a nurse or allied health professional;
  • Person or people who performs a pastoral care role in the community;
  • Lawyer(s) not engaged to advise the institution; and
  • Person or people with a demonstrable commitment to, and established experience in, furthering the welfare of animals, not employed by or otherwise associated with Federation University, and who is not involved in the care and use of animals for scientific purposes.

Ethics Committee members review ethics applications associated with research projects from all research disciplines in the University in accordance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research 2007 (Updated 2018) (‘National Statement’) and Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes.

The Committees promote ethically good research, identify issues that arise in research project design, review conduct of research, and deliberate ethical issues related to human and animal research.

Members of the Federation University Ethics Committees are required to:

  • Become familiar with the relevant guidelines and regulations;
  • Attend relevant/required training such as mandatory Animal Welfare Victoria training for AEC members;
  • Review applications and make recommendations regarding the ethical acceptability of projects being undertaken by Federation University staff and students;
  • Ensure that any comments submitted about a project are relevant to relevant guidelines; and
  • Maintain confidentiality of the committee’s proceedings.

Benefits include continued professional development. Though Committee members are volunteers, an honorarium to cover expenses associated with attending meetings is provided. The Committee is also supported by a team of professional staff who are available to answer both researcher and Committee member queries.

Other points to note:

  • Induction training is provided to all new members prior to their commencement on the Committee.
  • Animal Ethics Committee meetings are held every two months on Wednesday afternoons at the Mount Helen campus or via video conference.
  • Human Research Ethics Committee meetings are held monthly on Wednesday evenings at the Mount Helen campus or via video conference.
  • All members are required to sign a Confidentiality Agreement upon appointment.
  • Committee members are appointed for a renewable term of two years.
