The Foundation is an international development organisation working to prevent blindness and restore sight. This year marks The Foundation’s 30th anniversary of carrying on the legacy of Professor Fred Hollows, who believed every person had the right to quality eye care, no matter where they live. The Foundation has grown to work in more than 25 countries throughout Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and the Pacific, as well as Australia. The Foundation has restored sight to more than 2.5 million people worldwide. We have an ambitious five-year strategic plan that aims to take us even closer to realising our vision of a world in which no person is needlessly blind or vision impaired and Indigenous Australians exercise their right to sight and good health.

ABOUT YOU

You will be energised by a truly diverse role, equally comfortable providing administrative assistance as with analysing policy and supporting engagement with multilateral institutions. You will have outstanding organisational skills, with an ability to meet diverse and conflicting deadlines and utilising multiple IT systems. This role operates in a fluid and evolving environment; you must be comfortable to work with ambiguity around task objectives and an ability to proactively create opportunity. You will be able to take large and complex information and condense it down to suit any audience. You will have a good understanding of / or a willingness to learn complex political and bureaucratic systems. You will be a people person, able to manage a wide range of relationships and tailor your communications style to the specific audience. You will be consultative yet capable of directing towards outcomes, with an ability to persuade and with a high attention to detail.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Global Advocacy Support Officer is accountable for supporting the delivery of a range of global systemic advocacy initiatives in line with The Foundation’s strategic objectives. The role supports the Global Advocacy Team to influence globally significant public policy and practice in partnership with multilateral organisations, governments, non-government organisations and The Foundation’s Country Offices to advance eye health as a pillar of Universal Health Coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Global Advocacy Support Officer will support outcomes of the Global Advocacy Team related to:

Global advocacy project delivery

  • Research, analyse and interpret policy and other information relevant to set projects of work from a broad range of sources, and produce briefs, reports and other materials
  • Provide advice upon request to the Executive Director, the Head of Public Policy & Advocacy, the Global Advocacy Advisor and to teams across The Foundation on matters related to the set portfolio of work
  • support advocacy and influencing initiatives to advance objectives of the Global Advocacy team, including consulting and collaborating with sector partners, executing lobbying strategies and supporting direct engagement with government and multilateral platforms
  • Support initiatives to link global advocacy objectives with Country Offices
  • Support secretariat functions of the internal Advocacy Leadership Group in collaboration with the Global Advocacy Team
  • Coordinate and support the development of internal and external advocacy collateral and other communications materials in collaboration with the Global Advocacy and Communications teams.

Knowledge sharing and learning

  • Represent The Foundation externally on set projects and remain abreast of the global landscape to support internal intelligence gathering
  • Coordinate and maintain primacy of Global Advocacy content on the Intranet and The Foundation’s website in collaboration with the Global Advocacy Team.

Executive assistance and team support

  • Provide secretarial support to the Executive Director including: manage and maintain schedule and diary, screening and assessing incoming correspondence and ensuring appropriate distribution and/or response, conduct research for speech preparation as well as preparing presentations, reports, briefs and other documentation.
  • Support the Executive Director to coordinate timely, relevant and concise briefing papers and reports on key global policy and advocacy issues as required by the Board and Executive of The Foundation
  • Provide pro-active, high-level administrative support to the Executive Director, Head of Public Policy & Advocacy and the Global Advocacy Team, including budgeting and financial management, contract management, coordination of reports and office support.
  • Primary support for organising all travel and associated documentation and expense acquittals for the Executive Director and Head of Public Policy and Advocacy.
  • Manage team and relevant key organisational meeting logistics including; preparing meeting papers, circulating resources, first point of contact for inquiries and producing minutes.
  • Undertake project management and manage special projects as directed.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED

  • Some experience and knowledge of the role and functions of systemic advocacy within a national or international non-government organisation or government agency or political party office
  • Some experience providing administrative support to a senior executive or team.
  • Undergraduate degree in social science, political science, public policy or a related field.
  • Willingness to travel both domestically and internationally on occasion.
  • Excellent knowledge and capability utilising Microsoft Office software.
  • Ability to develop effective systems for office administration tasks.

Desirable Experience:

  • Some demonstrated understanding of human rights, health, disability or other related social discourse
  • Experience with international development practice and functions of multilateral institutions
  • Some understanding undertaking advocacy initiatives employing largely technocratic and direct advocacy approaches
