Forensicare is the statutory agency responsible for the provision of adult forensic mental health services across Victoria. Based at Melbourne Assessment Prison - Forensicare provides a detailed reception mental health screening assessment for every prisoner received into custody at the Melbourne Assessment Prison (MAP) in Spencer Street West Melbourne; outpatient clinics to mentally ill prisoners within the prison; a 16 bed Acute Assessment Unit (AAU) which provides initial assessment and treatment to seriously mentally ill prisoners; an after- hours mental health crisis intervention service and consultancy and training services for prison and service staff on the treatment and management of male prisoners with mental health issues.

About the role:

The Senior Social Work position plays a key role in the provision of Outpatient Social Work services for those incarcerated in the Melbourne Assessment Prison. The position provides high-level consultation and advice to members of the multi-disciplinary team on social work practice and related interventions. The position provides advice, consultation and engages in networking with other agencies and stakeholders to ensure individuals receive access to the required mental health care and support within the custodial environment.

Duties:

  • Provides high-level/intensive Social Work services at MAP as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Contributes to SW service development in conjunction with SW leadership group, including supervision and QI improvement activities
  • Provides advice, consultation and engages in networking with other agencies and external stakeholders.

Skills and experience:

  • Ability to undertake structured psychosocial and risk assessments as well as plan and deliver targeted interventions, including in individual, group and family work.
  • Has an understanding of relevant legislation, such, MARAM, Mental Health Act and other related frameworks
  • Interest/abilities in Social Work practice and service development, including clinical/social work QI activities, interagency projects and research.

Mandatory qualifications & registrations:

Social Work

  • Approved degree in Social Work and eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers.
