About Foundation House

The Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture Inc. (also known as Foundation House) provides services to advance the health, wellbeing, and human rights of people of refugee backgrounds in Victoria who have experienced torture or other traumatic events in their country of origin or while fleeing those countries.

The organisation was established in Melbourne in 1987 and is non-denominational, politically neutral, and non-aligned. Foundation House is a state-wide agency offering services in metropolitan, regional and rural areas, with head office based in Brunswick. We have approximately 200 staff with metropolitan regional offices in Dallas, Sunshine, Dandenong, and Ringwood.

The opportunity

Due to an increased demand for services, we are looking to expand our team of Counsellor Advocates on a 12-month fixed term contract.

The position will be based from one of our regional offices (Dallas, Sunshine, Dandenong and Ringwood).  At present the majority of Foundation House’s work is done remotely however there may be occasions where face to face work is required.

About you

  • Degree qualified as a psychologist, social worker, or counsellor or relevant university degree.
  • Ability to demonstrate your experience providing therapeutic interventions, advocacy, and risk assessment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of trauma informed practice models in working with children, young people adults and families of a refugee background
  • Experience in a range of approaches in supporting complex cases such as mental health, family violence, substance abuse issues
  • People from Afghan backgrounds, or who speak Dari, Pashto or Hazaragi will be highly regarded.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Counselling skills for complex trauma including knowledge of a range of suitable interventions, using a trauma informed and systems-based framework.
  • Experience working with communities and or advocating on behalf of refugees, asylum seekers, or other vulnerable clients regarding a range of issues related to health, welfare, legal and government.
  • Expert knowledge in trauma and its psychosocial impact on individuals, families, and communities.
  • Experience in the preparation of reports for medical and allied health professionals, other services and government bodies, and protection visa applications where required.

Salary and Benefits

Remuneration is based on our Enterprise Agreement 2014 of $96,804 gross salary per annum, plus 17.5% leave loading and 10% superannuation. Additional benefits include salary packaging up to $18,550, a range of flexible working options, a highly supportive team environment, excellent training and development opportunities, and onsite parking.
