The Great Barrier Reef is a unique icon and an irreplaceable ecosystem. It’s the largest living thing on earth and home to thousands of species of marine life, including six of the world’s seven species of marine turtle.  

For over 20 years the Great Barrier Reef Foundation has been the lead charity for the Reef, driving the immediate change needed for the Reef to survive for future generations. Right now, we have over 60 Reef-saving projects with over 65 project delivery partners. We are the action station for the Reef, bringing together people and science to deliver the world’s largest coral reefs program. 

ABOUT THE ROLE 

The Foundation is using a co-design approach to develop a fit for purpose and culturally grounded Reef Protection program that will see Traditional Owner Reef values, training and capacity building, as well as partnership establishment, take priority.

This new role within the Traditional Owner Partnerships team will develop and maintain strong relationships with Traditional Owners of the Great Barrier Reef and its catchments and assist in delivering on ground extension support for the Traditional Owner-led Reef protection projects spanning water quality, reef restoration and Crown of Thorns Starfish control, funded by the Foundation.

This is an ideal role for an early to mid-career professional to grow into and shape as their own. The role is suited to a person who is highly skilled and passionate about building strong relationships with Traditional Owners of the Great Barrier Reef and its catchment and with a background in environmental / marine management or international development. The role will deepen the understanding held by Traditional Owners about grant and project opportunities presented under the Traditional Owner Reef Protection work stream.

Reporting to the Associate Director of the Traditional Owner Partnership team, the position will work closely with all members of the team as well as the members of the Traditional Owner Technical Working groups to develop and support various grant projects at different complexities and scales. These grant projects will deliver on Traditional Owner led priorities within the Traditional Owner component held within the Reef Trust Partnership and its annual work plans.

The successful person will need to demonstrate a flexible attitude as well as possess high order interpersonal skills and operate effectively within a small cross-cultural team environment.

A large component of the position will be supporting the delivery of on-ground Reef protection grant projects led by Traditional Owners through extension, capacity building and partnerships.

THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT WILL HAVE:

  1. Experience in effectively working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples including a demonstrated understanding of the complexities associated with engagement of Traditional Owner groups within the Great Barrier Reef and its Catchment
  2. Ability to synthesise multiple lines of information and report effectively both verbally and in written form
  3. Demonstrated experience managing and supporting on-ground natural resource management type programs
  4. Experience in building and maintaining partnerships
  5. Experience and knowledge in relation to water quality, reef restoration and/or Crown of Thorns Starfish control highly regarded
  6. Strong relationship building and negotiation skills highly regarded
  7. Ability to multi task and work across multiple projects at a time
  8. Demonstrated experience in project management
  9. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with individuals, groups and management
  10. Experience travelling and working in remote locations for short amounts of time
  11. Commitment to the GBRF values and a passion for the cause

Job Location:

Townsville or Cairns preferred (Brisbane role location will be considered for the right candidate).

Work Type:

This is a full-time 2 year contract role with potential for further extension of 2 years and Flexible Work Arrangements available.

1 year secondment will be considered for exceptional candidates.

The salary range on offer is $85k - $95k pro rata plus super.
