  • Position Objective: To support the media, communications, engagement and branding activities and associated goals of the Great Eastern Ranges.
  • Status: Part-time (3 days per week, 22.5 hours), 12-month contract role with potential for renewal.
  • Salary package: $70,000 - $82,000 pa pro rata plus 10% super
  • Location: Sydney is preferred, but other locations in eastern Australia will be considered for the right candidate. The role is currently a work from home position.
  • Reporting: Reports to the Head of Communications & Partnerships.
  • Staff Reporting: Nil

Key Relationships

  • Internal: GER core team, GER Board Members.
  • External: Partners and stakeholders involved in the development and delivery of projects.

Travel requirements: Some travel within Australia will be required (subject to available budget).

OVERVIEW

The Media and Communications Officer is a hands-on position that will support the Great Eastern Ranges' (GER) media, communications, engagement and branding activities. Key responsibilities of the role include raising GER’s profile with the media and key audiences, crafting engaging stories for print and digital channels, organisation of high-level events, and supporting brand and fundraising goals. Reporting to the Head of Communications & Partnerships, the position will work closely with the GER core team, regional leads and funding partners to meet key identified goals and deliver on agreed milestones.

About the Position

The Media and Communications Officer is a hands-on position that will support GER’s media, communications, engagement and branding activities. Key responsibilities of the role include raising GER’s profile with the media and key audiences, crafting engaging stories for print and digital channels, organisation of high-level events, and supporting brand and fundraising goals.

Reporting to the Head of Communications & Partnerships, the position will work closely with the GER core team, regional leads and funding partners to meet key identified goals and deliver on agreed milestones.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Assist with the development and implementation of media and communications strategies that support GER’s short and long-term goals.
  • Develop, strengthen and maintain strong relationships with national, state and regional print, television, radio and online reporters. This includes identifying, contacting and pitching to media, responding to and managing media requests, organising media visits and preparing staff for interviews.
  • Actively identify, plan and craft engaging content and visuals to build the GER brand and take our story beyond niche audiences. This includes the drafting and pitching of media releases, thought leadership pieces, case studies, copy writing for web and social media channels, enewsletter writing, design and distribution, and creation of content production briefs.
  • Assist the Head of Communications & Partnerships to develop integrated media, communications and public relations campaigns to increase brand awareness and engagement.
  • Organise high-level online and face-to-face events to showcase GER’s work, share knowledge and lessons learnt, and raise the national profile of connectivity conservation. This includes the organisation of a major two day connectivity conservation conference in the second half of 2022.
  • Identify low-bono and pro-bono media, advertising and PR partnerships that help reach new audiences and expand our reach.
  • Maintain the GER website and assist with the development of new content, functionality, and templates.
  • Help to develop and implement the organisation’s fundraising strategy.

Key skills and attributes

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or marketing and/or a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of the Australian media landscape in all its forms, including print, online, broadcast and social media.
  • A well-established network of media contacts and experience creating and maintaining media lists.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills with the proven ability to craft inspiring Plain English content that effectively engages different audiences across multiple platforms.
  • Proven experience organising and delivering successful high-level events.
  • Ability to plan and prioritise tasks to meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Proficient in Adobe Photoshop, MS office and ideally familiar with Wordpress or other similar content management system.
  • Proactive, self-motivated worker with strong attention to detail.
  • The ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills with the ability to build rapport with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • An understanding of and commitment to conservation.

Desirable:

  • Experience using Adobe Indesign, Illustrator and/or Premiere (or other video editing software) will be highly regarded.
  • Background in environmental science or experience working for an environmental organisation.
