First Nations Justice Senior Campaigner

GetUp is looking for a First Nations Justice Senior Campaigner to join our First Nations Justice Campaigns team.

SCHADS Classification Level 5-6, salary range $82,780.88 - 94,436.16 per annum (pro-rata) + superannuation, determined by relevant experience and qualifications.

This is a fixed term maternity leave contract of up to 12 months.

Who is the First Nations Justice Team

GetUp’s First Nations Justice Team of talented campaigners lead the organisation’s work on issues that impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities. The team prides itself on deep strategic thinking and strong engagement with impacted communities, while inspiring and mobilising the diversity of people across our movement towards change.

Our days are filled with analysing the political state of play, developing long-term and rapid-fire strategy, engaging with politicians, media and First Nations communities, spotting the right moment to intervene, running impactful tactics including everything from protests to undercover investigations, writing hard-hitting copy, and coming up with creative ways to give our members the best chance for impact.

Some of the campaigns we are working on at the moment are; a campaign to stop fracking and protect country, a campaign to strengthen the national heritage act that will protect sacred sites and the ongoing campaign to stop black deaths in custody and seek justice for families.

The First Nations Senior Campaigner will be responsible for:

  • Work with a team of campaigners to deliver First Nations Justice campaigns which:
    • Achieve demonstrable social change outcomes for First Nations communities;
    • Put impacted communities and their allies at the heart of our theory of power and change;
    • See our movement and supporter base grow and diversify, and their enthusiasm for action on First Nations issues increase;
    • Enact campaigning best practice, including innovatively combining digital and offline campaign techniques;
    • Are informed by a strong justice lens.
  • Draft, devise and review campaign strategy in accordance with team goals and organisational strategy;
  • Write and review high quality campaign content across all GetUp channels;
  • Monitor the latest news and recommending appropriate courses of action;
  • Lead on campaign research, planning and evaluation;
  • Contribute meaningfully to team fundraising targets;
  • Represent GetUp in the community and media;
  • Support engagement with key stakeholders, including political offices;
  • Lead from within campaigns teams to execute campaigns and meet their goals;
  • Manage or supervise campaigns staff to success.

Relevant Experience

GetUp campaigners come from a wide range of professional experiences. Successful GetUp campaigners have had previous experience as; activists, copywriters, journalists, public relations specialists, teachers, community workers, communications specialists and academics.

A GetUp Campaigner on the First Nations Justice Team has/is:

  • A deeply held understanding of the issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and a demonstrated commitment to justice for First Nations peoples;
  • A demonstrated track record of working collaboratively and communicating effectively with and within First Nations communities;
  • Has demonstrated communication skills, who is adept at thinking through complex politics and communicating them simply and clearly;
  • Has strong digital skills and a willingness to learn new technologies, and who thrives in a fast-paced environment;
  • Capable of working autonomously on a range of varied tasks and projects, and takes the initiative to get the job done;
  • Is a team player who is always bringing off-the-wall, creative ideas to the table; and
  • Has at least two years experience in the workforce.

Bonus points for:

  • Experience in GetUp-style online campaigning;
  • Experience working in the media cycle; and
  • Experience in journalism or copywriting.
