Racial Justice Director - Federal Election - Sydney / Melbourne

GetUp is looking for a Racial Justice Director to lead our national communications strategy and digital campaigns work on racial justice during the upcoming Federal election.

SCHADS Classification Level 7-8, salary range $100,260.16 - $113,062.56 per annum (pro-rata) + superannuation, determined by relevant experience and qualifications.

This is a 12 month fixed term contract based in Sydney or Melbourne, however we are open to flexible arrangements for the right candidate.

GetUp’s Federal election work

GetUp harnesses the power of elections as key change moments on our issues – to build public support, cement policy wins, demonstrate electoral power and shape the public discourse. We do this by mobilising our members and the broader community at scale to tip the balance to a more progressive Australia.

This election our campaign will be anti-racist in our strategy, story, minds and hearts. We will work with impacted communities to identify opportunities for the GetUp membership to stand in solidarity and scale impact. We will drive a powerful narrative campaign, centring the voices of affected communities, to hold politicians to account.

Elections provide GetUp with an extraordinary platform to experiment with new ideas, test new messages and use the GetUp megaphone to strengthen the democratic participation of, and empower, First Nations peoples and Communities of Colour. This role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced communications professional to bring new ideas to the way GetUp campaigns for racial justice and help shape the national conversation on race in the upcoming election.

The impact of the Racial Justice Director

The role in itself provides a unique opportunity to lead GetUp’s racial justice work through and beyond the upcoming federal election. To support you in your success, GetUp will offer you a culture of experimentation, high autonomy and support form around the organisation necessary in order to make this work thrive.

Key accountabilities for this role include:

  • Determining and driving a proactive communications strategy for the Federal election that sets the standard on anti-racist politics, and challenges racist policies, candidates and narratives;
  • Rapidly determining campaigns and comms responses in light of the latest news and developments that cut into a crowded national conversation, and are underpinned by collaboration with affected community and sector partners;
  • Leading a team of staff, including people with lived experience, and fostering a safe team culture of collaboration, innovation, curiosity, best practice and continuous improvement;
  • Representing GetUp in the community and media.

About you:

You will be someone who is technically savvy across digital channels and an inspired storyteller able to connect and influence varied communities and stakeholders. You thrive on the fast pace of the political and media landscape, and are highly effective in taking others on the journey. You have a deep understanding of engaging and collaborating with a diverse range of stakeholders across cultures and lived experiences. Specifically you are or have:

  • High-order strategic analysis and political judgement required to win campaigns and translate complex policy ideas simply and clearly;
  • A strong communicator who is adept at thinking through target audiences and creating effective messaging frameworks;
  • Lived experience that informs an understanding of the impacts of structural racism and colonisation in an Australian context, with a proven ability to apply this lens to your work;
  • A demonstrated ability to work with senior stakeholders across multiple sectors, as well as affected communities and campaign partners;
  • A formidable leader and manager who can coordinate a team to success, celebrate and evaluate, and knows how to support staff with lived experience;
  • Familiarity working in the world of politics, advocacy and the media cycle, with a specific passion for strengthening a movement of everyday people to take action for change on a wide range of social justice issues.

Bonus points for:

  • Experience in digital fundraising;
  • Experience developing communications campaigns especially in an electoral context; and/or
  • Relevant policy training or experience.

If even a couple of these criteria speak to you, you could be the perfect person for the job. Formal education, qualifications and extensive experience matter less to us than excellence, initiative and drive.
