The organisation

The Global Evergreening Alliance (The Alliance) is an international NGO which coordinates the development and implementation of massive-scale environmental restoration and sustainable agricultural intensification projects in developing countries around the world.

The organisation was established by its members to facilitate a collaborative approach to the global problems of food insecurity, rural poverty, climate change and land degradation, and to develop and implement long-term solutions at a globally significant scale.

Its core members include World Vision, CARE International, Oxfam, Catholic Relief Services, Conservation International, The Nature Conservancy, the World Resources Institute and The World Agroforestry Centre.

Position description

We are seeking a skilled WordPress Developer to design and implement attractive and functional websites features for the organisation. You will be accountable for providing web development solutions and outcomes, including the creation of a dedicated and unique web design, support functions, process improvement, and compliance - as required.

You will be responsible for both back-end and front-end development, including the implementation of WordPress themes and plugins as well as site integration and security updates.

To ensure success as a WordPress Developer, you should have in-depth knowledge of front-end programming languages, a good eye for aesthetics, and strong content management skills. The role requires a high level of experience with PHP, Linux and MySQL. Advanced experience in WordPress is essential.

Hours and Frequency of work

The position requires 1 days’ work per week and there is some flexibility regarding which days and times the successful applicant chooses to work. All staff are currently working from home and continued remote working is negotiable.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Someone with the ability to manage the front and back end of the website, to add design elements, to regularly maintain functionality, to troubleshoot difficulties and to ensure the site is working optimally.

• Addition of design elements
• Custom PHP and MySQL coding
• Optimise existing systems to improve performance and scalability through service/application tuning and code refactoring.
• Building custom plugins and themes from scratch, as required
• Providing ideas and technical approaches for front-end development
• Designing and working from wireframes and contributing to the overall solution based on organisational requirements
• Building templates and prototypes using HTML
• Styling websites using CSS and SASS to work responsively across devices
• Writing JavaScript to interact asynchronously with APIs
• Adding interactive functions to websites by writing custom JavaScript modules
• Browser testing and QA
• Support/fix existing systems
• Identifying opportunities and risks
• Assisting with the scoping and development of projects
• Troubleshooting difficulties with the website.

• Interpersonal and communications skills, including the ability to engage with colleagues both internally and externally, and with people from diverse backgrounds
• Time management skills and an ability to prioritise tasks, manage heavy workloads, and meet deadlines
• Problem-solving skills and an ability to work independently, as well as an effective team member to achieve shared goals
• Writing skills, including the use of correct grammar and expression

• Working knowledge of WordPress, back-end development and software/data maintenance.

• Knowledge of social media platforms, with demonstrated ability to create high-quality content, an understanding of targeted campaign posting, and SEO strategies.

• Experience with campaign monitoring tools (Google Ads, Facebook Ads) and social media data analysis.
• Familiarity with video editing software
• Training and/or experience in marketing, communications, media and/or journalism, while not essential, would be an advantage
• Knowledge, training and/or experience in environmental conservation, rural development, agriculture, climate change or similar, while not essential, would be an advantage

OTHER DUTIES

• Representing the organisation as required, including by participating in functions, events and meetings

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

• Tertiary qualification or proven significant experience in IT /web development
• Not less than 3+ years of proven work experience as a WordPress Developer.
• Knowledge of front-end technologies including CSS, JavaScript, HTML, PHP, SQL and jQuery.

CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT
