The headspace Mental Health Clinician will be a values orientated, dedicated and passionate person who will has experience in the management of mental health for young people aged 12 to 25.

headspace is the National Youth Mental Foundation and provides early intervention and support for young people aged 12-25 years. headspace is designed to make it easy as possible for a young person and their family to get the help they need for problems affecting their wellbeing including four core areas: mental health, physical health, alcohol and other drug services and work and study support.

The Role

The objective of the headspace Mental Health Clinician – Tern program position is to provide high level clinical services through the headspace service model. Tern is recovery-orientated program designed to offer support for young people who are currently experiencing the impacts of past trauma in their lives. In line with the objectives of headspace and the lead agency (Northern Australia Primary Health Limited - NAPHL), the Tern program model of service delivery will:

  • Provide evidence-based high level clinical services to young people and their families attending headspace.
  • Provide recovery orientated, trauma informed as well as trauma specific care based on the core principles of Safety, Trustworthiness, Choice, Collaboration and Empowerment.

The position of headspace Mental Health Clinician - Tern program, reports to the headspace Clinical Lead.

To be considered for the role, you will have:

  • Approved tertiary qualifications in a relevant mental health or allied health discipline including psychology, mental health nursing, social work, or occupational therapy.
  • Current registration as a Health Practitioner with AHPRA, or a Social Worker with eligibility for full membership with AASW.
  • The ability and experience to undertake intake and screening activities, including comprehensive bio-psycho-social assessment to determine client needs, and to assist clients to access appropriate services.
  • Highly developed clinical skills in managing young people at risk,including suicide and violence risks.
  • Experience and demonstrated knowledge of the National Standards for Mental Health Services.
  • Knowledge of and experience working within the Family Systems Theory and the delivery of systemically informed care to children and young persons and their families.
  • Proven track record in building and maintaining effective working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of adolescent and young adult development (12 - 25 years) and clinical experience working with young people at risk of developing or having mild to moderate as well as severe and complex mental health issues and their families.
  • Skills and competence at completing bio-psycho-social assessments for clients experiencing mental issues/disorders; knowledge, skills and experience in the delivery of a range of treatments relevant to these young people.

Desirable:

  • Possess ability to obtain a Medicare Provider number and/ or Mental Health Accreditation to maintain eligibility to provide a full suite of headspace services.
  • Minimum two years of experience working in the relevant field.
  • Advanced clinical skills in managing young people at risk, including young people in the midst of a crisis and distress.
  • Culturally sensitive practice – including experience working with Aboriginal, South Sea and Torres Strait Islander young people as well as young people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • A broad understanding of the mental health service system and the primary care health system in Australia.
  • A broad understanding of the challenges and experiences of young people in Australia, including specific community factors.
  • Experience working in headspace.
