Public Relations Manager - Flexible Location

Hireup

ABOUT HIREUP

Hireup is an online platform and community for people with disability and their families to find, hire and manage support workers that fit their needs and share their interests. Whether it’s support with getting to work or catching a local footy game, Hireup gives people the tools to live life on their own terms.

With thousands of registered users and support workers in big cities and remote communities all across Australia, Hireup is a national network of local supports, committed to delivering an individualised approach to support and community-driven future for the disability sector.

As a purpose-led organisation with over 230 HQ staff (and growing), we are dedicated to powering the evolution of the disability sector. We do this by keeping the community at the heart of our decision making and encouraging a culture defined by kindness, innovation, equality and storytelling.

We’re also proud to offer flexibility not only in terms of when people work, but also where they work. Whether you're in Sydney or across the country, we want our people to have the ability to choose where they deliver their best work - whether office-based, hybrid or fully remote, just let us know what works for you!

About the Role

The Public Relations (PR) Manager is a critical role straddling Communications, Content and Marketing. Reporting to the Director of Communications and Content, you will be responsible for identifying compelling stories from within the Hireup community and finding opportunities to get those stories wide exposure. The role is one of a bridge – between individuals with great stories to tell, and, primarily, journalists. That means those writing, commissioning and amplifying stories for ‘mainstream’ media (both local and national) as well as sector-specific media and social media.

Priorities - the work

  • Establish, own and deliver a comprehensive public relations strategy designed to maximise the exposure of the impact of Hireup’s stories, business, people, and projects
  • Set up systems to engage with and create constant dialogue with our clients – people with disabilities and their families – and our support workers nationwide
  • Identify stories and characters likely to interest the media and persuade the people involved in those stories to help tell them
  • Identify and nurture journalists across Australia, developing deep and mutually-beneficial relationships
  • Regularly, and effectively, pitch stories to journalists and others – with follow-ups and ongoing engagement
  • Set up and maintain effective databases of people, stories, contact details and interactions
  • Help identify and improve representation of disability across the media
  • Identify people beyond the media to pitch Hireup-created content to – our podcasts, videos, articles and resources
  • Measure and report on the effectiveness of PR efforts through published/broadcast output

Skills - the person

  • A tenacious, determined finder, teller and pitcher of compelling human stories
  • A strong background in either public relations or journalism
  • A strong, fast writer with track record of placing stories in the mainstream and specialist media
  • A great listener – ready to be the person at Hireup who hears more stories from our community than anybody else
  • A multi-skilled producer – able to switch seamlessly between long-form writing, short-form writing (including for social media), audio and video
  • Excellent contacts among national and regional journalists, and connections to major players on social media and within Australia’s disability sector
  • Evidence of nurturing contacts across a complex sector like the disability sector
  • Strong organisational skills; with ideas for clear processes for keeping track of stories
  • A prolific story-salesperson – genuinely enthusiastic about hearing dozens of stories – and having numerous phone and in-person conversations with journalists each week
  • A strong social media presence and willingness to develop that further in the role
