About Us

Banjima Native Title Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC (BNTAC) is the Prescribed Body Corporate (PBC) that holds native title on trust for the Banjima People.

The Banjima native title determination area covers a large area of land and waters in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. There are approximately 500 adult Banjima People and many more Banjima children.

As well as their roles and responsibilities as a PBC, BNTAC’s objectives also include to provide relief for disadvantaged Aboriginal people, maintain and support traditions, laws, language and culture of Banjima people, as well as provide economic, social and cultural benefits, including housing, training and education.

The Role

This role is a key position with BNTAC’s Native Title Team, supporting the Native Title Operations Manager with:

  • Future acts matters and the negotiation of land access and heritage agreements
  • The Implementation and Compliance of native title agreements, including two (2) Indigenous Land Use Agreements
  • Key cultural and heritage projects

Duties

At the direction of the Native Title Operations Manager:

Future Acts Matters

  • Assist with management of Future Acts notices and National Native Title Tribunal Processes
  • Assist in negotiation of land access and heritage agreements
  • Assist in the negotiation of major future acts and land access matters as required

Implementation of Native Title Agreements

  • Assist with the implementation and compliance of two Indigenous Land Use Agreements
  • Monitor the implementation and compliance of other land access and heritage agreements
  • Liaise with mining companies, independent consultants and service providers
  • Assist in the management and coordination of Heritage and Implementation Committees, including liaising with committee members, preparation of agendas, compliance summaries and reports
  • Manage logistics for implementation and other meetings

Other matters relating to the protection of Banjima Native Title and Cultural Heritage

  • Assist with the managing key cultural and heritage projects
  • Liaise with and assist BNTAC’s Cultural Advisors, Heritage Managers and other relevant service providers as required
  • Assist in the development of systems to enable the long-term management and storage of cultural and heritage information
  • Coordination of other environmental, heritage or cultural matters as required
  • Participate in other projects as required
  • Periodic travel to the Pilbara region

Selection Criteria

  • Tertiary qualification (minimum Bachelor’s degree) in anthropology, law or similar
  • Sound knowledge of the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), the Mining Act 1978 (WA), the Future Acts regime, Native Title Agreements, and other relevant legislation
  • Experience working in the Native Title Sector, or in a related role within a mining company or government sector
  • Exceptional stakeholder relationship management skills
  • Experience in monitoring compliance of agreements
  • Cultural competence, especially with Aboriginal People
  • High level time management and organisational skills
  • Ability to work autonomously, setting own initiative, and within teams
  • A demonstrated high level of written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a busy environment while managing conflicting demands
  • Current Driver’s License. 
  • Ability to travel in regional and remote areas of the Pilbara as required

Salary and Benefits

One year contract (with the possibility of extension subject to funding).

Salary: $90,000 pa, plus superannuation.

  • The role is based in Perth and regular travel will be required to Pilbara.
