Families Program Coordinator - Newman

Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa

Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa (KJ) has an exciting opportunity for a patient, flexible and nurturing person enthusiastic and passionate for working with families in Indigenous communities.

The Families program is an integrated, place-based program, focussing on Martu caregivers and their families with an aim to improve Martu child-wellbeing outcomes and learning, teaching and working together to become strong in both worlds. The program operates in two remote Martu communities in the Western Desert, which forms part of the eastern Pilbara region of Western Australia.

As the Families Program Coordinator, you will be working directly with caregivers, children and their families, focussing on facilitating key activities that address the barriers to raising strong and healthy children. You will also work collaboratively with other KJ staff in the community, at the KJ Newman office and with partnering agencies such as the local Aboriginal Medical Service and other visiting agencies.

The Families Program is holistic in its approach and employs community development principles to deliver outcomes in the following key areas:

  • Cultural knowledge and language
  • Early childhood education
  • Leadership and development
  • Health and wellbeing

You will be working in an exciting cross-cultural context that aims to enable Martu to realise the aspirations of achieving the best outcomes for their children, who are the future generation. Martu have a strong cultural base and want their children to be strong in their culture while also being confident in the mainstream world.  They believe that this is the key to making Martu communities sustainable for future generations.

About KJ

“KJ is working with Martu to build strong, sustainable communities”.

Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa (KJ) is an established, successful and highly-regarded Indigenous organisation based in the Eastern Pilbara town of Newman. It has been operating as an independent Martu company for 13 years and works in the remote communities of Jigalong, Parnngurr, Punmu and Kunawarritji.

KJ is focused on three complementary objectives:

  • to support Martu to look after culture and country;
  • to build a viable economy in Martu communities; and
  • to build pathways for young Martu to a healthy future.

To do so, KJ delivers a suite of social, cultural, environmental and economic programs.  It has a strong reputation for engaging and supporting Martu in successfully delivering these programs and is the biggest employer of Martu in the region.

The role of a Families Program Coordinator is both challenging and highly rewarding.  Being community-based, it is an important position and crucial for success of KJ’s programs and for the success of the community itself.

KJ staff are passionate, creative, committed and resourceful in the design and implementation of programs and activities, in partnership with Martu. Building these partnerships require KJ staff to be adaptive, consultative and it demands the ability to listen to, understand and respect Martu views and attitudes.
