About Wintawari Guruma Aboriginal Corporation (WGAC) 

Wintawari Guruma Aboriginal Corporation (WGAC) holds the native title interests of the Eastern Guruma people (whose country is around Tom Price) and is responsible for the administration of all Heritage and Native Title matters. The Corporation is a registered charity that also has an enterprise arm and a heritage consultancy business. The group has a turnover of around $8m and employs 15 fulltime and 30 part-time and casual staff.

About the role

You will be responsible for supporting the Corporation in delivering deep environmental functional expertise to improve its engagement with mining companies seeking to develop resource projects within the Eastern Guruma native title determination area. A key part of this role will be supporting the Corporation secure improved environmental outcomes through negotiation and engaging with the regulatory approvals processes. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: 

  • Develop a cumulative impact assessment policy framework and work plan to achieve a cumulative environmental impact assessment for Eastern Guruma country;
  • Leverage resources to conduct the cumulative impact assessment;
  • Assist in the development of Social, Cultural and Heritage Management Plans in consultation with mining companies;
  • Build an environmental database to improve business intelligence and decision making;
  • Work in closely and support capacity building of the Wintawari Guruma Aboriginal Ranger Program as the delivery body for environmental compliance monitoring activities;
  • Analyse and provide organisational recommendations to mitigate environment risk, whether cumulative or cultural/asset specific;
  • Establish a compliance database and audit program of Ministerial Statements and proponent compliance with them; and
  • Provide Business-wide Environmental expertise to manage Environmental risks and compliance with environmental legal obligations.

Selection Criteria:  

  1. Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science specialising in Hydrology, or Botany or equivalent; and
  2. Technical and Operational experience working in an environmental science role in approvals and/or assessments
  3. Demonstrable ability to effectively communicate and cooperate with Traditional Owners and a desire to assist the Eastern Guruma People protect their environmental and cultural heritage assets.
  4. Strong understanding and experience of working with Commonwealth, State and Local Government environmental legislation, approvals processes, policies and guidelines;
  5. Excellent communication skills, especially listening skills, and track record of preparing policy documentation, management plans, briefing notes and reports;
  6. Proven ability to identify trends and risks in large-scale datasets and recommend and win support for an appropriate course of action;
  7. Ability to identify and manage environmental risks in the context of both operating and project environments;
  8. Experience in preparing scope of work documents and engaging environmental consultants;
  9. Project management and data analysis experience;
  10. Current valid driver’s license; off-road experience and recovery skills. Maintaining a licence is a condition of ongoing employment in this role.
  11. Working with Children’s Check (WCC) and Police Clearance or the ability to obtain them.
