Policy Officer

Internet Association of Australia Ltd

About the role

Are you interested in how and why the internet works? Do you have a passion for preserving the rights of internet users, service providers and content systems? Are you concerned by the ways governments try to control the internet? Are you a recent or near graduate or someone who has worked in related or junior regulatory/policy roles?

We are seeking someone who can look inside proposed government and industry policy and uncover the issues affecting the internet’s operation and use. You will assist our CEO in developing public policy positions on behalf of our members addressing key matters in the internet regulatory and public policy landscape. You will do this under guidance, checking in regularly to debate and examine the issues.

This is a permanent full-time position, however job share/part-time will also be considered for the right person. We expect this role to grow over the longer term as our need expands.

About the organisation

The Internet Association of Australia Ltd (IAA) represents internet service providers and professionals with an emphasis on the smaller end of town. We also operate a vital part of the internet infrastructure – Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) – where digital businesses, internet access providers and others interconnect their networks. From the bigger digital marketplaces, major cloud systems, through education networks to the backyard internet service provider, IAA literally joins the networks together. We also support our members’ development through representation and education. IAA has both corporate and professional members committed to internet development.

Key responsibilities

  • Monitor and analyse public policy, tracking legislative and regulatory development
  • Prepare submissions, strategy papers, white papers, briefings and correspondence
  • Assist in the preparation of high-level advice to IAA members on regulatory issues
  • Develop initiatives for promoting and protecting the interests of members
  • Represent IAA in industry forums and cultivate industry and public policy networks
  • Draft communications for IAA members on relevant issues, such as commentary on proposed legislation, in the form of blogs/articles, papers, social media pieces and the occasional presentation.

Benefits

We’re a modern, virtual organisation with great national and international connections. Our small team is caring, fun to work with, and we use the latest and greatest internet technology. You’ll get respect and a great opportunity to grow into an industry that is genuinely critical to Australian society. We’ll support your ongoing learning and provide a workplace where you can thrive and grow.

Skills and background

  • Well-developed research, analytical and written communication skills
  • Ability to analyse legislation and public policy documents and provide advice to senior management
  • A desire and ability to learn in a dynamic and largely virtual environment
  • Experience working in a similar role, or within the internet industry broadly, is desirable, but a sound grasp of association and internet life will get you going
  • It is expected that this role would suit a near or recent graduate in either law, digital cultures, media, public relations or related areas, with up to 1 - 2 years of relevant experience such as in a not-for-profit organisation, association, or internet business.
