The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to protect and assist people affected by conflict and violence and to promote the laws that protect victims of war. An independent, impartial and neutral organisation, the ICRC is based in Switzerland. It employs 20,000 people in 100 countries and is financed mainly by voluntary contributions from governments and national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.  

The Mission in Canberra is seeking a full-time (100%), permanent Legal Adviser to promote international humanitarian law (IHL) in the Pacific.

The Legal Adviser will remain abreast of global developments in IHL and related policy and, through research and analysis of national law and practice, will engage governments and other stakeholders on IHL in the Pacific, Australia and New Zealand under the supervision of the Regional Legal Adviser. 

The successful applicant will have a detailed knowledge of IHL, hold a Bachelor of Laws and have experience in legal research, analysis and drafting. Knowledge and understanding of the Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement, familiarity with the Pacific region and a good understanding of or work experience in government would be an advantage.
