The Independent Education Union of Australia NSW/ACT Branch represents the industrial and professional interests of teachers, support staff and operational staff in non-government schools. The IEU also represents teachers in early learning centres.

The union is currently seeking applications for a full-time Organiser to work with our teacher members in early learning centres. Although the position is a leave replacement, there is a possibility the position would be ongoing.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Visiting and recruiting teachers in early learning centres
  • Responding to phone calls and emails from members in early learning centres
  • Advising the union on current issues affecting teachers in early learning centres, including in relation to teacher accreditation, funding, licensing etc
  • Participating in enterprise bargaining with individual centres or larger EC employers.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

  • Commitment to the principles of the trade union movement
  • Sound communication skills, good teamwork skills and attention to detail
  • Knowledge of issues affecting teachers in early learning centres and early childhood education more generally

DESIRABLE

  • Qualifications as an early childhood teacher with NESA accreditation
  • Previous involvement in the union.

The successful applicant will be appointed under contract by the Executive of the union and be

accountable to the Secretary in the first instance. The Organiser will be a member of the Officers’ team. Salary will be in accordance with the IEU Officers’ salary scale. Starting salary is usually one incremental step above that which the applicant would earn in 2022.

Some weekends and evening work will be required. Overnight travel may also be necessary and a current driver’s licence is essential. A car will be provided to perform union work.

PAY AND CONDITIONS

There is a generous package of pay and conditions including:

  • Salary: dependent on experience and existing rate of pay
  • Annual leave: six weeks
  • Personal/carer’s leave: 15 days per annum
