About the Role

We currently have a great opportunity to join our relief pool within our crisis accommodation shelter. This role involves overnight and weekend work including on-call and rostered shifts.

The responsibilities of Youth Workers is to provide direct care and supervision to young people experiencing homelessness accommodated at the shelter, and may involve:

  • Acting as a role model by encouraging observance of shelter expectations and developing young people's skills and self-worth
  • Providing information, referrals, emotional support and crisis intervention including liaison with government and non-government organisations (e.g. school, police, child safety, youth services)
  • Assisting young people to participate as full as possible in making decisions about activities undertaken
  • Assessment and intake of young people referred to the shelter, and exit where required
  • Contributing to the development and maintenance of case plans
  • Assisting with everyday living tasks and maintaining safe and welcoming home environment
  • Maintaining communication with the on-call person throughout shift and providing accurate and informative changeover at the start and end of shifts
  • Undertaking administrative activities, including maintaining records.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  1. Relevant tertiary qualifications/training (Cert IV/Diploma or above in Youth Work, Human Services, Welfare, Residential Care) and/or previous experience working with young people or within a residential setting
  2. Knowledge and understanding of the issues confronting young people and families, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and the issues which impact upon them
  3. Ability to apply youth work theory and practice to engage and motivate young people, and to respond quickly and effectively to diverse, demanding and stressful situations
  4. High standards of professional behaviour including sound understanding of work health and safety, child protection, privacy etc.
  5. Good negotiation and active listening skills, written and verbal communication
  6. Computer proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook
  7. Ability to independently and as part of a team
  8. Current Working With Children Check (Blue Card)
  9. Current First Aid & CPR certificates
  10. Current Drivers Licence
  11. Flexibility to work nights and weekends
