About the Role
We currently have a great opportunity to join our relief pool within our crisis accommodation shelter. This role involves overnight and weekend work including on-call and rostered shifts.
The responsibilities of Youth Workers is to provide direct care and supervision to young people experiencing homelessness accommodated at the shelter, and may involve:
- Acting as a role model by encouraging observance of shelter expectations and developing young people's skills and self-worth
- Providing information, referrals, emotional support and crisis intervention including liaison with government and non-government organisations (e.g. school, police, child safety, youth services)
- Assisting young people to participate as full as possible in making decisions about activities undertaken
- Assessment and intake of young people referred to the shelter, and exit where required
- Contributing to the development and maintenance of case plans
- Assisting with everyday living tasks and maintaining safe and welcoming home environment
- Maintaining communication with the on-call person throughout shift and providing accurate and informative changeover at the start and end of shifts
- Undertaking administrative activities, including maintaining records.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- Relevant tertiary qualifications/training (Cert IV/Diploma or above in Youth Work, Human Services, Welfare, Residential Care) and/or previous experience working with young people or within a residential setting
- Knowledge and understanding of the issues confronting young people and families, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and the issues which impact upon them
- Ability to apply youth work theory and practice to engage and motivate young people, and to respond quickly and effectively to diverse, demanding and stressful situations
- High standards of professional behaviour including sound understanding of work health and safety, child protection, privacy etc.
- Good negotiation and active listening skills, written and verbal communication
- Computer proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook
- Ability to independently and as part of a team
- Current Working With Children Check (Blue Card)
- Current First Aid & CPR certificates
- Current Drivers Licence
- Flexibility to work nights and weekends
