The Organisation

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Australia is a national not-for-profit organisation focused on mental health training and research. MHFA courses teach members of the public how to provide initial help to a person who is developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem, or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional help is received, or the crisis resolves.

COVID-19 has presented immense challenges for the community, and the continued dissemination of their evidence-based courses into the community has never been more important.

The Role

Reporting to the CEO, the Director Research & Curriculum’s primary purpose is to lead a small team of research, and learning & development professionals across a range of training programs to conduct research, and to plan, develop, implement, review and evaluate curriculum across all MHFA programs (including Standard, Youth, Teen, Older Person).

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee the ongoing program of evaluation of MHFA curriculum (both internally and in partnership with external organisations)
  • Use the results of evaluation trials, formal/informal feedback and other data to improve MHFA curriculum
  • Direct and lead research designed to assess the effectiveness of mental health first aid and to determine the best strategies of providing such first aid
  • Interpret research and evaluation and translate research and content into suitable instructional design methodologies
  • Contribute to research projects related to specialised MHFA courses that aim to determine the best strategies of providing first aid and to assess the effectiveness of first aid for specific mental health problems
  • Identify, lead and participate in related mental health first aid projects
  • Take ownership of curriculum quality - developing and maintaining MHFA curriculum standards and ensuring all curriculum adheres to these standards.
  • Train Instructors to deliver MHFA programs

The Person

With a commitment to evidence-based practice in mental health, you have:

  • Tertiary Qualifications in Mental Health, Adult Learning, Human Resource Management, or another relevant discipline
  • Significant experience in the development and delivery of adult education curriculum materials
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of learning theories and andragogy, instructional design and contemporary learning and development practices
  • Have demonstrated experience in designing, writing and producing learning content in various modes (including digital) for a diverse workforce
  • Understanding of mental illnesses and mental health services, and expertise in at least two of MHFA’s core program areas – adolescents, adults and/or older adults
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage grant and project budgets
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve complex situations including conflict resolution that may involve psychological, behavioural and emotional issues
