ABOUT THE KIMBERLEY LAND COUNCIL LEGAL TEAM:

The Kimberley Land Council (KLC) provides a range of services to native title parties (prescribed bodies corporate (PBCs), native title holders and claim groups) throughout the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Legal services include providing advice about commercial contracts, land use and other agreements, representation and advice in proceedings relating to future acts, heritage protection under State and Commonwealth law, the preparation and conduct of applications for determinations of native title under the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), and legal advice generally in relation to other matters relevant to the aspirations and needs of Aboriginal people consistent with the KLC’s objectives to get back country, look after country, and get control of our future.

These legal services are provided by the multidisciplinary Legal Unit within the KLC which comprises Legal Officers, Anthropologists, specialist Future Act administration staff, and administrative support staff. The Legal Unit works closely with the Native Title Services Unit for the delivery of high quality legal and corporate governance services to native title parties throughout the Kimberley region.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

As a member of an interdisciplinary team in the Legal Unit of the Kimberley Land Council, the Senior Legal Officer is responsible for the collaborative delivery of legal services in the Kimberley native title representative body area relating to the recognition, protection and management of native title rights and interests, protection and management of Aboriginal cultural heritage, commercial negotiations, and advising on corporate governance and compliance to prescribed bodies corporate. The Senior Legal Officer represents native title parties in courts and tribunals, and in negotiations with future act proponents, and provides legal advice to directors of prescribed bodies corporate on compliance under the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (Cth), and associated subordinate legislation.

Salary and benefits:

This position is being offered at a KLC EL 1.0. Superannuation of 10% and additional salary allowances including district allowance, rental assistance where applicable, salary sacrificing options and 5 weeks annual leave.
