Two Way Science Coordinator - Broome

ABOUT THE POSITION:

This position is a dedicated role to support the implementation of the Two-Way Science Initiative in the Kimberley region, funded by NIAA and in collaboration with the Department of Education.

Two-Way Science provides an opportunity for all students to learn about science from the world’s oldest continuing cultures, to strengthen Aboriginal student’s wellbeing and engagement and to build respect for Aboriginal histories, cultures, people, knowledges and experiences amongst school staff and students.

The Two-Way Science Coordinator will be responsible for the planning, coordination and implementation of the KLC’s Two-Way Science Initiative, working collaboratively with the Department of Educations Two-Way Science Consultants in the Curriculum Support unit.

The Two-Way Science Initiative will improve STEM learning outcomes through community engagement and intergenerational transmission of Indigenous knowledge. It will build education partnerships between communities, rangers and schools; leading to increased capacity of Aboriginal families and communities to direct and deliver culturally responsive education programs with education providers.

The position will be responsible for managing the delivery of the program as well as reporting and evaluation.

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

We are looking for a person with a strong education and training background coupled with the experiences of working with Aboriginal communities in an education setting.

You will have the ability to draw the connection from traditional ecological science to western science and the education curriculum.

You will be a great communicator, having the ability to communicate between all stakeholders. You will have a passion for working with young people and improving education outcomes.

You will be a great mentor, empowering, and enabling local Aboriginal people to lead the Two Way Science Initiative from now into the future.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. General

  • Work collaboratively within the Land & Sea Unit team to achieve project outcomes
  • Support Kimberley Ranger Groups to plan for and implement Two-Way Science activities
  • Take guidance from traditional owners and cultural advisors regarding project activities
  • Take guidance and support from the Two-Way Science Coordinator (50d) to enhance your knowledge on all culture, language, protocol and integration of knowledges
  • Advise on, report on and be a point of escalation for Two-Way Science Initiative issues, updates and information
  • Establish and maintain effective networks and mutually respectful relationships within the Kimberley region, Department of Education, Catholic Education and or Independent School Schools; and with Aboriginal communities, Kimberley Indigenous Ranger Groups and PBC’s
  • Administer service agreements, grants and contractual arrangements in collaboration with key stakeholders and schools
  • Participate in, lead and facilitate projects, teams and working groups

2. Project Implementation

  • Plan and coordinate the implementation of the Two-Way Science Initiative effectively and within agreed timeframes
  • Apply agreed evaluation and measurement frameworks to monitor effectiveness of Two-Way Science Initiative implementation
  • Identify, monitor, manage and escalate, where required, risks associated with the Two-Way Science Initiative in an effective and timely manner
  • Manage program funding through existing processes to support the Kimberley Two-Way Science Initiative
  • Implement project workplans including developing materials, protocols and guiding and conducting research as required
  • Monitor project progress and budgets
  • Prepare project reports

3. Other

  • Maintain compliance with KLC policies, processes and procedures
  • Actively contribute to the health and safety of the workplace by adhering to all health and safety policies and procedures
  • Demonstrate an awareness of and commitment to the KLC Vision and its Values
  • Participate in relevant training and professional development activities
  • Other tasks as directed

Applicants must also possess a current C class drivers’ licence, a current Working With Children Check (WWCC) and have the ability and willingness to travel away.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

This position is classed at a KLC Level 6.0. Superannuation of 10% and additional salary allowances offered include district allowance, rental assistance where applicable, salary sacrificing options and 5 weeks annual leave.
