Senior Social Work Counsellor / Practitioner - Flexible location

knowmore legal service is currently seeking an experienced Senior Practitioner to join our organisation within the community legal sector. About knowmore 

knowmore is a nation-wide, free and independent mainstream community legal centre providing legal information, advice, representation and referrals, education and systemic advocacy for victims and survivors of child abuse. 

knowmore uses a multidisciplinary model bringing together Intake Officers, Lawyers, Social Workers and Counsellors, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement Advisors and Financial Counsellors to provide trauma-informed, client-centred and culturally safe legal assistance to clients. Services are provided through a national phone, video link and face-to-face services in key locations, supported by a comprehensive program of outreach and community engagement across Australia. 

About the Role 

The Support Services Senior Practitioner will provide key leadership support to the Support and Trauma Informed Practice Manager, through assisting with practice leadership, technical support and coordination across the Team. The role will contribute to and lead by example on positive workplace cultures that support wellbeing and resilience, consistent with knowmore’s framework. 

Working in partnership with the Manager, it is expected that the position holder will add their clinical expertise to case consultations within the team and the broader organisation and to work collaboratively with the team in the development of client, team and organisational resources, practice guides and policy as required. 

As one of knowmore’s recognised specialists in trauma-informed practice, the Senior Practitioner will also be available to assist with training others, including staff induction and other internal and external training opportunities as directed. Consistent with all senior roles in knowmore, the Senior Practitioner is expected to provide practice leadership and assist with oversight of team members’ practice at the direction of the Manager. 

Qualifications, Experience and Key Selection criteria 

  • Tertiary qualification in Social Work, Psychology or Counselling including current membership with an appropriate professional body; 
  • Five years or more relevant work experience; 
  • Recognised and demonstrated clinical excellence in trauma informed practice; 
  • A well-developed understanding of institutional child sexual abuse, its impacts and current best practice approaches to working effectively with survivors; 
  • Experience working in trauma-informed, multidisciplinary services and teams; 
  • An understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander peoples and experience in providing culturally safe services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients; 
  • Experience in a relevant leadership role, or demonstrated ability to do so including managing staff where required; 
  • High level technical information coordination skills including producing high quality documents, rosters, spreadsheets and other information; 
  • Competence with client data bases including how to accurately input, extract and analyse data; 
  • High level written skills including client case notes and the ability to assist with the production of practice documents and reports; 
  • Highly developed teamwork and stakeholder engagement skills including building successful referral relationships with other services; 
  • Experience in and willingness to work at a variety of off-site locations including external agencies, correctional centres, client home visits and outreach to other services; 
  • A high level of commitment to self-care, reflective practice and supervision. 
  • The ability and willingness to travel and having a current driver’s licence are highly regarded. 

Location & Hours 

  • Locations: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth 
  • Full time or part time hours – minimum 4 days per week 
  • Ongoing Contract - subject to the funding of the knowmore service.
