About the Organisation

Katherine West Health Board provides a clinical, preventative and public health service to clients in the region west of Katherine. All of the organisation's Health Centres have a team of resident health professionals and visiting specialists, allied health professionals, as well as community development and public health personnel.

The organisation and its members recognise the rights that the Aboriginal people have in respect to accessing their traditional lands. These rights are recognised under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act. The Community Health Centres operate within these communities and are surrounded by land held by traditional owners.

KWHB is managed by the client communities through the Board and its directors. The organisation covers the following areas: Bulla, Kalkarindji/Daguragu, Lajamanu, Mialuni, Nijburru (Pigeon Hole), Timber Creek and Yarralin, some of the most remote and culturally rich regions in the country.

About the Opportunity

The Director Medical Services plays a key clinical leadership role in the KWHB Leadership Group. A key focus of the role includes providing the Executive and the Board with advice on strategic planning and implementation of health services. The DMS takes on the leadership of the KWHB Clinical Governance Framework including high level support to all KWHB Clinicians. The DMS leads the delivery of clinical services in the Katherine West communities, including a component of direct clinical work in Katherine West remote health centres.

Including but not limited to, leading the implementation of the Clinical Governance Framework at KWHB; working with and providing leadership to Primary Health Care Governance Committee (PHCGC), to maintain excellent clinical governance. This role will promote coordinated, evidence-based and best-practice Primary Health care, provide General Practitioner services to Katherine West communities as negotiated with regard to capacity and organisational requirements.

This role will also participate in Katherine West quality improvement activities including collection and interpretation of data, and ensure all KWHB PHC staff have the appropriate access to clinical professional development activities.

This is a senior leadership position and will require the following:

  1. Eligible for full registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency
    (AHPRA) as a Medical Practitioner
  2. FRACGP or FACRRM (or overseas equivalent)
  3. Hold or have the ability to attain vocational registration
  4. Experience in leadership and coordination
  5. Effective communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills, including the ability to operate in a cross cultural environment
  6. Ability to provide clinical services across the remote areas within the KWHB region
  7. An understanding of and commitment to the principles of continuous quality improvement
  8. An understanding of how the principles of Equal Employment Opportunity, and Work Health and Safety applies to the delivery of primary health care services
  9. Demonstrated computer literacy, particularly in the use of electronic health record
  10. Ability to travel to remote areas for periods of time by road and light aircraft
  11. Hold or have the ability to hold a current Working with Children Clearance (NT Ochre card) and Criminal History Clearance
