About the client

I am a highly sensitive person with a very challenging medical condition, which also causes sensory hypersensitivity. This means that even the tiniest sounds, faintest smells, and too much commotion in the background can bother me greatly! I am someone who is living under enormous pressure, stress, and tension in my body which can be hard for others to even imagine. My life is far from easy or enjoyable, and what you will see is not the real me. Sometimes the pain, fatigue, and frustration I experience is overwhelming and this comes out. Please don't take it personally, I'm just trying to cope with what my body is doing which is very difficult day in, day out. I appreciate everything my Support Workers do for me, I can't live without them. But I don't have the energy to say hello or goodbye to anyone, even the people I love most. I would love for everyone to understand my situation, but it's not for the faint-hearted. If you can try and put yourself in my shoes, it's possible you might enjoy working with me, I'm honestly doing my very best. Before I got in this situation, I was a disability support worker, and I put my heart and soul into it. I would love to find carers who feel the same way I do about disability care. I value Support Workers with the skills and experience to help me get through each day safely and with as much dignity and respect as possible. I already have a team of amazing Support Workers, and want to expand my current team. I also have a dedicated unpaid carer who helps support my team with the practical details of my daily routine (she wrote this ad for me!). I can be a very tough customer, but the Support Workers I have love supporting me every day. I can promise you one thing, working with me will be an unforgettable experience!

Activities

Right now we are looking for the right person/s who will feel like they belong on the team of amazing Support Workers we already have. We don't have set hours or days as yet, and will work with the right person/s to find a suitable regular schedule.

Essential skills / experience required in use of sling hoist, basic personal/continence care, showering / hygiene, feeding and preparing modified texture meals for swallowing issues. The client values his own safety very greatly so experience with hoisting is most highly valued skill set. The Client lives in a chemical/fragrance free home so the right person needs to ensure they do not use overpowering perfumes while working. We need people who will adhere to the clients requests especially around when quiet time is needed. Person needs to have a good book to read, cross word or puzzles to do but no technology where there is noise. Client does not have wifi. This is very important.

Preferences

Empathetic and deeply caring approach required for a highly sensitive client. Reliability and commitment to the role is essential to client's safety. Ability to stay calm under pressure and maintain a low stimulation environment at all times (ie: no social conversation initiated, respond to requests to modify environmental variables such as air-con temperature, opening/closing windows). Whilst diligence is appreciated, being able to sit quietly (and read, for example) in between tasks is highly valued. Support Workers who wish to remain busy all shift are not suitable as the main role is quiet background support with minimal household tasks, which all need to be completed very quietly. Resilience is essential attribute as client is in extreme pain and unable to express gratitude or any form of greeting toward carer as matter of routine. Whilst the daily living routine is the same every day, the client's needs can be dynamic and changing, so being able to adapt and respond to the current daily requirements is also essential. Being able to listen and respond to the client, express unconditional positive regard, and remain focused on completing practical tasks safely and competently in personal care are part of the winning formula.
