About the Role

The purpose of the Child and Family Practitioner position is to develop and implement high quality Family Action Plans for families referred to the Placement Preservation Service, where the children or young people are on statutory orders with Child Safety Services. The Child and Family Practitioner utilises the Parenting Under Pressure (PuP) framework and other evidence based approaches to assess the family situation and guide the appropriate interventions. The Child and Family Practitioner will work in partnership with the Parents/Caregivers, children and young people, relevant government agencies and stakeholders in order to promote positive outcomes of preservation for children and young people. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement high quality Family Action Plans for families referred to the Placement Preservation Service utilising the Parenting Under Pressure (PuP) framework and other evidence based approaches
  • Develop and maintain functional and supportive relationships with children and young people and their parents/caregivers in order to promote positive outcomes of preservation
  • Complete initial strengths and needs assessments, and continue ongoing assessments including safety planning as necessary
  • Support and monitor family environment and ensure all family members have the opportunity to participate in the action planning process and assist them to implement the strategies outlined in the action plan
  • Meet with clients and family members to gather input for case plans and ensure their views are represented
  • Coordinate formal action plan review meetings with relevant stakeholders, as well as participating in and contributing to Child Safety’s assessment and planning processes
  • Support and maintain client welfare and interests at all times
  • Participate in negotiation between LWB and the relevant government agency to ensure that each child/young person is provided care that meets their needs for stability

Skills & Experience

  • Recognised Social Work qualifications with eligibility for membership of the AASW and/or a Bachelor of Psychology or other relevant qualification
  • Current Drivers Licence
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and delivering evidence based interventions with individuals or families or systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with children and young people and families who are subject to child protection intervention.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop quality action plans that are consistent with appropriate policy and procedures.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work autonomously in carrying out agreed action plans for multiple families simultaneously. 
  • Highly developed analytical skills and the ability to apply these skills in case management.
  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals, families and communities from a strength-based, culturally appropriate perspective that are part of the out of home care sector

Successful candidates will be required to clear probity checks including National Criminal History Record Check and hold Tasmanian Working With Vulnerable People Registration.
