Lock the Gate Alliance Limited

ABOUT LOCK THE GATE ALLIANCE

The Lock the Gate Alliance (www.lockthegate.org.au) is a national grassroots organisation made up of over 150,000 supporters and more than 250 local groups who are concerned about risky coal mining, coal seam gas and fracking.

The mission of Lock the Gate is to protect Australia’s natural, cultural and agricultural resources from inappropriate mining and to educate and empower all Australians to demand sustainable solutions to food and energy production.

The Lock the Gate staff all bring unique and broad skills, local connections and gutsy input to campaigns across the country. They are passionate about the work they do to protect Australian communities from coal and gas mining.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Beetaloo Basin in the Northern Territory has been identified by the Federal and Territory Governments as a priority region for large scale fracking gas fields. It is a region of incredible beauty and significance to the Traditional Owners, with precious waterways, groundwater systems and landscapes set to be industrialised.

New gas pipelines are being touted to get the fracked gas to export terminals. The voices of thousands of concerned community members have been successful in putting some areas off limits to fracking but are now being ignored as the companies push ahead with their fracking plans.

The Lock the Gate Alliance is seeking an experienced campaigner and organiser to support and elevate the voices of impacted communities and prevent damage, guide implementation of strategy and to engage with other stakeholders and supporting organisations nation-wide.

The role will involve the following responsibilities:

  • Lead development and oversee implementation of the community organising plan for the NT campaign in collaboration with the broader team
  • Facilitate the development of the NT campaign strategy in the face of emerging opportunities and support the team to implement it
  • Manage and grow stakeholder relationships, in the Territory and nation-wide and liaise closely with other organisations on shared strategies
  • Boost the active community participation in the campaign, supporting the NT team to increase outreach and active participation
  • Back First Nations-led organisations fighting fracking where requested to do so and support Traditional Owners on the frontline of fracking developments wanting to connect up and get their voices heard
  • Work with other organisations to advocate for policy changes needed at Federal and Territory Government level and engage with relevant decision-makers
  • Support the work of local coordinators, Traditional Owners and local groups with resources and materials as needed
  • Help coordinate corporate campaign tactics where applicable
