The Lock the Gate Alliance (www.lockthegate.org.au) is a national grassroots organisation made up of over 150,000 supporters and more than 250 local groups who are concerned about risky coal mining, coal seam gas and fracking.

The mission of Lock the Gate is to protect Australia’s natural, cultural and agricultural resources from inappropriate mining and to educate and empower all Australians to demand sustainable solutions to food and energy production.

Lock the Gate's staff all bring unique and broad skills, local connections and gutsy input to campaigns across the country. Lock the Gate staff are passionate about the work they do to protect Australian communities from coal and gas mining.

The Position

We're seeking an experienced Content Writer to produce content to promote Lock the Gate’s activities and campaigns. The Content Writer will work with and support our Digital Communications, Campaigns and Fundraising teams.

Over one third of the Australian continent is covered in licences for the extraction of coal and gas. Across the country there is a strong and diverse network of people standing up to these inappropriate coal, gas and fracking expansions. Standing up for water, for Country and for local communities. They all have incredible stories to tell. This position will help bring these voices to the forefront of the debate, plus keep our active supporters up to date with how they can help.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Write quality copy including website content, reports, fact sheets, fundraising materials and other campaign materials.
  • Draft compelling and engaging supporter communications to support and enhance Lock the Gate’s coal and gas campaigns across Australia.
  • Review and improve opening and click through rates of supporter communications.
  • Create content that is specifically crafted to capture the attention of particular target audiences, and a range of audiences across Australia.
  • Edit and polish existing content to improve readability.
  • Proofread content for errors and inconsistencies.
  • Stay on top of trends and identify opportunities to maximise content to support the aims and objectives of LTG.
  • Design simple campaign materials, infographics and memes as required.

Skills and experience

To be successful in this role you will have the following :

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in communications, journalism, or related field.
  • Proven work experience as a Content Writer, Copywriter or similar role (minimum of 2-5 years' relevant experience).
  • Demonstrated experience drafting successful supporter communications.
  • Ability to rapidly familiarise yourself with local, regional and state campaigns and issues to create quality content.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Proficiency with relevant design software (InDesign, Photoshop etc) and experience in creating strong memes, infographics and other relevant materials.
  • Familiarity with major social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
  • Effective verbal communication skills with the ability to interact across all levels.
  • Ability to accurately match and reflect the tone and style of Lock the Gate’s communications in your writing.
  • Good time management skills, including prioritising, scheduling, and adapting as necessary.
  • Ability to work closely with a geographically separated Comms team.
  • Proficiency with computers, especially writing programs, such as Google Docs and Microsoft Word.
  • Creative ideas, a passion for content and the ability to keep abreast of innovation, developments and trends in digital communications through proactive self learning.

This is a part time position at 3.5 days per week (negotiable for the right candidate) for initial 12 month Term with possibility of extension. The Annual Salary for this role is $49,000 plus Super (equivalent to $70k full time).
